I've recently set up my new rio 180 and was wondering if there was any external sign that the filter needed changing. I've only used fluval in the past and they have a clog indicator on them.

It seems a bit of a ball ache to have to take the media out to check it. Does anybody else use them and what do you do?

Hi there. I too have the Rio 180 and to be honest it's been great so far. I rinse out the white filter in old tank water once a week and change the carbon once a month. The blue sponge filters just need rinsing in old tank water every 6 months or so.
There's no external sign that the filters need changing but if you keep to the above routine it's really quite easy.
