I know this seems a stupid question but I'm lost.

My tank has cycled with fish in. I'm buying new fish on Saturday. I haven't cleaned my filter. I know this must be done in aquarium water and not tap water etc. But will rinsing it kill some of the bacteria and cause an upset before I stick my new fish in - causing even more inbalance.

Am I safe to rinse my filter media and add fish at the same time or does that need to be done at different times?

Thanks,
Glynn

No real reason to rinse it, unless its getting clogged but that shouldnt really be happening yet

if it is needing rinsed, rinse it with water from your aquarium! :good:

ANY filter should only be "cleaned" (rinsed in old tank water) when and ONLY when it becomes clogged... theres nothing to be gained by doing it on a regular basis.
Depending on stock, this may well be every week... could be every six months ! Just wait until the flowrate drops to a point when you say, "filter needs a clean" !

Great guys, Thank. It's just building my confidence.
The flow is fine, well more than fine - I'll leave it for a while before I clean it.
