In a last ditch attempt to get the wife interested in my fish / fish keeping, im pondering the idea of getting a couple of Bettas.

"hahahah" i hear the guys shout in the background... ;D Hush your mouthes as this is all about me worming an 8 foot tank into my house ;)

Anyway, as it stands i have a 5 foot at the moment, some pictures can be seen here.

I've since moved my Kribensis out and the only fish in there i can think of that might ever develop any attitude towards a betta would be the bolivian rams, but at the moment, they spend most of their time chilling out and are not breeding.

The question i have is, two male Bettas...would it be possible in a tank this size? OR could i leave a male and a female in a tank this size and forget about them? Or will the male eventually go hunting and rip her to pieces? or is it simply a case of suck it and see? Are there any recommendations on what type of Betta might be suitable. I can openly admit, i have zero knowledge of these fish.

Thanks ladies!

I think you need to man up, mate. ;)

4 mintues, not bad going, i was expecting a quicker response though :D This is all about me expanding fishtopia, that 8 footer isnt happening at the moment i got a lot of work to do :D

Well personally I would say no to 2 males and no to 1 male and 1 female.
Yes to a few females though.

Be prepared to get lots of different replies though :D

My issue with females is that they are about as interesting as Jeremy Kyle and the wife agrees :/ I can easily go with the one Male if thats all i can get away with. :)

They might have longer fins but doesn't mean there more interesting :)

Majority of my females all have long fins, maybe not as long as the males but still long.

Why not 1 male and other fish that would mix with him??

A bunch of female bettas are certainly interesting enough. They have the personality but not the lovely long fins but they come in all the same colouration as the males do.

or ONE male.

It could work in a tank that size, but not how it's currently planted (you'd need a lot more plants, preferably floaters with long fuzzy roots like water lettuce), but I recommend against risking it. If you were to attempt it, the idea would be that the two males must never meet, under any circumstances. It would be more likely to work with a pair of young brothers (so young that fins would not have developed yet).

What about a few Betta imbellis? (They only come in short-finned.) They're more likely to get along and you could get a few pairs or a couple of males with a few females for a tank that size.

Females really are a good alternative, but do lack the long fins…

Okie dokie, thanks for the info, my powerheads would rip floating plants to pieces in no time, been there done that, so i'll avoid that route! I'll go with the one Male in the big tank!

Any recommended breeders anyone can suggest? Or any of you ladies have any males for sale? I know a few of you are into breeding them :)
