for the discus :) There gonna LOVE it in there. I was thinking about putting sand in as a substrate.... not something i have seen asked on here before, which is why i am asking now. anyone know of any reason (OTHER than personal preference) why this would not be a good idea?If its ok im gonna have aload of corys in there. If there is a genuine reason why i shouldnt use sand though, im just gonna put my 12" gibby in there

is this a cube that is 3 foot high or 3 foot in length ? is its 3 foot high, then wow, that would be nice

ive got a cube tank. still maturing it. got it custom made. its 26" long 23" deep and 28" high. looks very nice ;)

Tisn't a cube lol.

And is it big enough for discus? Personally I wouldn't keep them in a tank less than 4'x2'x18"

the tank used to be mine, and its huge, its 3 ft wide 3 ft high and 2 foot front to back.
i was going to keep my angels in it but it was jst to big for my house

I know it aint a cube..... but its more of a cube than a triangle Mr Pendantic!

i dont care what you would keep them in Jay... i was asking about wether sand would be ok with them ! :p

it is MORE than big enough for 6 discus.... and i am more than happy to put them in them in there. Just not sure if sand is ok with them

Do you have a picture of it ? I would like to see as It could be a future(way future) tank I would like to setup.

yep,

its on the first pic on there on the right, looking rather sorry for itself. I have kicked one of my chairs out of the lounge to the tip, brought the stand in and painted it silver with Hammerite and it now resides in my lounge. Just need a fluval 404 for it and it will be filled with water (cloned from one of my other tanks) and this shall become my 12th tank :)

There is no reason why you can't keep a sand substrate, as long as you can keep it very clean and don't let it compact. That is unless you want to raise baby discus in which case a bare bottom tank is best. With fish around 3" and above it's not so important though, but you'll still need to keep it really really clean, which may be a right pain given the depth!

cheers kev. given that im gonna have corys in there, its gonna be no more than 1/2 an inch deep. Just outta interest though, what impact would compacting have on the tank? never heard of that one before and im interested in the comment.

cheers

Bascially the sand compacts and gases can build up that are possibly harmful. With half an inch it probably wouldn't be a problem but still stir it up after so often to be safe. Do a search for sand and compact for more info.

The 'gas' pocekted caused by the bacteria. also lowers nitrate and when comes into contact with the oxygen in the water is harmless.

but it also forms hydrogen sulphate if i`m not mistaken wich is very harmfull to the aquatic enviroment
