Anybody know anything about Rice Fish ? Medaka's ? Oryzias latipes and some others like O. woworae ? There is an article in the July / August 2022 Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine about them and it speaks glowingly about them. I don't think I have ever seen one in person but this article claims that they are very common , breed readily and can be kept in unheated aquariums. Is anyone keeping these fish ? What do you think about them ? Seems they've also been around since Moby Dick was a guppy.

Easy to keep, easy to breed, eat any sort of fish food, get along with others, don't destroy plants, hang out near the surface. Nice fish, just a pity they don't turn up on the market very often. Main drawback is they aren't brightly coloured.

I used to keep Oryzias latipes and Oryzias dancena. Just like what @Colin_T stated, they're very easy to keep and breed. Very peaceful and don't harm plants. I just wish other species would be more available in the hobby such as O. eversi, O. dancena, O. profundicola, and so on.

Other things to add that wasn't mentioned is that rice fish prefers water that has little to no flow and hard water.

The Japanese hobby is doing a lot with them, colour variety-wise. They're the new shrimp. given their durability and ability to survive in small tanks. After the disaster in Japan a few years ago, the grid was compromised and these fish took off.

They used to be considered killies, but research showed that to be a miss. Most are dead easy to keep and breed. Okay fish. O. woworae are fun to see breeding, as they drag bundles of eggs around.

I've kept O. woworae. Lovely little fish, metallic blue males, yellow females. There were always females with attached eggs in the morning. Pity the other fish ate the eggs :(

Thread title made me think this was a recipe, at first glance
