I'd like to make a little cave or tunnel in the tank, covered in either riccia or java moss. but i dont want it to spread. i think (going by james' journal pics) that java moss would be best - what do you think? And would slate be the only real option for the structure?

Thanks :D

I don't know about Riccia, but Java Moss can be trimmed to keep it from spreading more than you want it to. Plus, it grows very slow (without CO2, etc.). Along with slate you can also use terra cotta, like plant pots. I made a structure using broken up terra cotta pieces. Came out pretty good if I do say so.

it really depends on how much maintenance you want do...
with Riccia i find that it comes loose from its holdings and floats to the top of the tank when it grows.
With java moss you attach it with fishing line, then it grows, and sticks to the ornament.. then all you need to do is prune it every so often.
