I was at sears and i saw they have an under sink filter sort of thing called a reverse osmosis filter or something. Does anyone know if this is safe for fish? I think for the 100 dollars it costs, it might be worth getting rather than hauling 20 gallons from a LFS every 2 weeks.

i saw this one, but it was open box for 100 bucks:

R/O units are often used by fish keepers, for marine set-ups or for soft water fish in hard water areas. Most water if fine for a large variety of fresh water fish. Is your tap water so bad that you need to buy water? The R/O unit makes almost pure water its too pure for fish and some of the calcium and other minerals have to be added back to the water to make it habitable for fish. You can buy the minerals in a bottle or add a proportion of tap water to the R/O water to get it to the hardness or ph that you want for the fish you are keeping. I am in the UK so I don’t know those brands, basically they vary in price depending on how many gallons they can process per day and some other criteria about water purity, quality and size of membrane etc.

i live in philadelphia, pennsylvania and the water here is terrible. I can't get the pH above a 7 no matter how hard i try and it's incredibly hard. My bolivian rams always look off color because the water quality is so bad. I want to get some cockatoo dwarf cichlids and breed them so i need to get softer water somehow :/. and i cant afford new lighting to plant a 60 gallon tank.

yah pH is fine for my bolivians it comes in about 6.4, its just incredibly hard and i cant get them to breed. I also can't get the pH up high enough for my NW cichlids so im selling them and getting some cockatoos!
