Returning fish to a LFS.. Discussion!

At my lfs they say that they take them back and resell them and let you if you want to get another kind of fish. I was going to do that for a gourami I had that was so aggresive he would not live with any fish I put him in with. But he died because he got ich and I didn't notice for about two days and when I treated him he died a few hours later. :byebye:

I can only comment on what happens at the shop I work in.
Any fish that we take in is sold on.

Just today I persuaded an old lady(must've been at least 70) to bring in her menagerie that she had in a 20 gallon tank, (list below), as she really liked the look of dwarf honey gouramies and said that she was waiting for her current fish to die :/ before buying them.
I said that we would re-home them and let her take the gouramies.

1 6"elephant nose fish
2 6" koi angels
2 3"albino tiger barbs
3 pentazona barbs
2 5" silver sharks
1 6" glass catfish
2 6" golden sucking loach (cae)

Needless to say she was well overstocked

I did a good thing today (pats himself on the back)

They much have looked like sardines in a can. Man that's crowded. Aboutn 60" of fish. One thing's for sure. She probably wouldn't have had to wait long for her fish to die.

This is totally off the topic but it bites when you get your tank fully stocked. You can't buy andy more fish. Now when I go in the LFS, all I can do is look....and try to figure out how I can afford another tank and where to put it. ;)

Thats a nice bit of profit on the side!

at work we take in most unwanted fish apart from plecs at the moment because we're over run with the damn things.

we'll usually just stick returned fish in a un used bottom tanks for a while make sure there all good then move them to a better tank wack a label on and sell them.

i know my LFS just plunks trade-backs into a sale tank as soon as they're acclimated.

but nothing goes into their 75g display tank that isn't well quarantined--that tank is GORGEOUSLY overstocked with australian rainbows and is hugely planted. ultra-

We have one lfs that takes in tons of returns. They have a huge morray, that someone brought in, and have had huge ir. sharks. All kinds of stuff. Even the big comets, and things like that. They have great variety from owner bring ins.

I personally would not allow a live fish to be 'disposed of' or 'flushed' or any such wrong to be commited. Anyone who works in an lfs and does such things is either a jerkwad or is forced to by the owners of the establishment which in turn makes the owners jerks.

My LFS takes returns, even if the fish wasn't originally from them. Back when Marie Antoinette, my midas hybrid, was still little she beat Aristotle the oscar up pretty badly... Since Aristotle is like a puppy and I love him to death I was forced to return Marie, and my LFS took her no questions asked. Of course, I later bought a tank divider and got her back after I saw she recognised me every time I visited .
Now she thinks Aristotle is her mate and they live happily together in a 80 gallon, no aggression whatsoever.

My lfs gives me store credit and just sells them again.

When i sould all my New Worlds and eventually went on to African, they put them all together in what must've been a 60 gal tank, i thought they would be sold in a week, nearly a month later i went back and walked passed it and stopped and said "Wait, i know that tank." and only realised it was all my fish :p

Anything I take back doesn't have a chance to get back into a tank. The staff usually snap up any fish I bring in because they are big, healthy and make a poor example of a fish out of anything you'd find in their store.

I have had staff stare dropjawed at many fish I have taken in and have even had a few argue with me because they thought my guppies were platies because of their robustness (Doesn't say much for their so called "expertise"). 9 times out of 10 the bag is placed in a "not for sale" tank and they are taken home straight after their shift. A few times staff members have even bickered over who was gunna buy the fish.

Personally I don't see what the fuss is, if they actually looked into the hobby more and used a bit of common sense then they wouldn't be so suprised about how my fish look because theirs would be just as nice. Maybe not as big (I do seem to have a knack of growing alot fish I keep larger than the average), but just as nice looking
