We went away for 2 weeks, my next door neighbour feeds my fish for me, I leave a measured ammount in small film containers for the fish. My friend comes in every 4th day to give them bloodworm. This friend had the phone number of a another friend who is a keen fishkeeper and would drive over if there was any problems with the tank................I am deverstated :( 23 fish died while I was away, including by 2 beautiful 7in Clown Loaches that I have had for 9 years......My friend only notiticed the Clown floating on the top of the water, 2 days before we returned home...................The tank is full of white spot, and you can imagine what the nitrite and nitrate reading was
Of course the tank has been treated now...but now I have green and red algea bloom because of the nitrate build up..................I dont think I want to go on holiday ever again

I'm sorry to read that, you must be devastated :(

(The-Wolf hugs goldie)

I hope things improve for you soon

oh my ... I'm so sorry to hear that =( I know what I felt like last time I went away for 2 weeks ... I actually got the person that was looking after my fish to email me every day and include photos every 2 days. Not looking forward to going away again in march, even though I came back to all fish alive (actually, all fish + 1 baby danio )

Dont give up on holidays though, it might have gone really wrong this time, but it doesnt mean that next time you go someone else wont be able to look after it. Hope you'll be able to clean up your tank properly and get the rest of the fish back to a healthy state

Thank you Wolf, I need a hug right now.....ohhhh how my poor fish must have suffered, I have been in tears since Tuesday

Holy crap.. I'm so sorry, that's got to be so hard.. and I thought I was upset when I took my fish home for Christmas, and woke up to find a female guppy dead!

*Hugs.*

Next time, just do what Erised said she did. Ask for emails with pictures.

How awful for you to return to all that :-(

I really hope you manage to get your tank stable again and that you feel that you can trust people to look after it properly next time you go on holiday.

I can't afford a holiday as I spent so much money on my fish tanks

Im sorry to hear about your loss, but im really sorry about the clown loaches. I love mine and you had big ones.

:rip:
I'm really sorry 2 hear of ur losses.
I've been planning a 2 week holiday 4 the summer but have been worried sick about leaving the fish with other people.
Luckily i know the owner of my lfs, he has marine fish so i'm hoping he's gonna b ok looking after them!!!!!
It's the sad stories like your own that make it a reality though... (not meaning yourself) but fish keeping is not like having a hamster in a cage.... it's a lot more than that.
I hope you recover from ur losses soon though
HUGE HUGS 4 U :)

Wait a minute. You were glad your fish suffered through chilly water and dying in it so you could get some new cool fish? :(

to the OP-I'm so sorry for your loss. You must have had at least some of those fish for a long time and if you're anything like me you were probably at least somewhat attached to them.

aww goldie,(DD also hugs goldie)

what a shame

hope everything works out

DD

I am a bit upset with my friend who came round every third day to feed my fish bloodworm, because she has kept Tropical fish herself in the past.....She said she thought it odd that she did'nt see the Clowns ( 7in long both of them)...she thought they were just hiding in their tunnel.......As for all the rest of the fish that died, well I have NO idea why she did'nt spot them floating...I know some will have been eaten  but white spot was clearly visable to me as soon as I returned home and the lights in the tank were on.......If only she had thought to phone my other friend (who lives some miles away) the white spot could have been stopped.
The tank is clear of white spot now, except for my chain loach......But I am still trying to get the Nitrate down, and now of course I have green slime algae in the tank because of the high nitrate...So at the moment it is a vicious circle, and I am having to monetor the tank carefully....I can't treat the algae until the white spot has cleared.. and the nitrate is making it worse :-(
Yes I was VERY attached to the fish I lost especially Flipper and Dipper my beautiful Clowns....8 years is a long time to have had them, and any fish lover would be the same........
They were worth about £30 each, but that is beside the point......
My friend was doing me a favour so I can't blame her.............these things happen (SADLY)..... :-(
