here's the story...a long, long time ago in a land far away i went to the lps and bought 4 zebra danios at their suggestion to cycle the tank (they did at least tell me about cycling). anyways, now that i have discovered this site, i now that my 10 gal is too small for them. i had planned to get a 20 gal long and get some more danios and corydoras. well, now my betta obsession is taking over and i think the area i had planned to put the danio tank is going to be home to my new tsunami babies from yeevia. this puts a hold on my danio plans as i live in a tiny apartment.

here is my question(s): is it bad for me to keep them here in a tank i know is too small for them? or should i bring them to an lfs where some one else might put them in an uncycled tank? i haven't found a place near me that i feel confident would take good care of them!

thanks for all your advice!

yes, it will be bad for you to keep them in a tank that you know is too small for them.
yes, you should take them to a lfs or you could try and find someone in your area that will house them in the correct conditions.
why not place a fee ad in your area saying Free to good home...

I kindof have the same issue. I got 4 zebras because I thought that their colors would look nice with them swimming through green plants. Well, I guess. But now I'm totally restocking my tank (I have only the zebras and 1 guppy). I'm thinking about getting a pair of blue rams, a school of cardinals, some panda cories, and amano shrimp.

Anway, I got the zebras at PetCo, and I don't think they'd take them back for some reason. So my only option is to give them to the only LFS in town. But I'm sure that the LFS will only feed them to their marine fish, as marine is their specialty. So, I'm kindof stuck with the hyperactive little fellas. If I could give them back I would because that's better than euthanizing them or putting them in a tank that is too small for them. But then again, I guess they would be serving some cosmic sort of destiny if they got eaten... Eh, I guess I'll keep them for now.

You can always get another tank!

With all the lovely fish available, you will always see others you want. The choice is often to make a commitment to the fish you have, or to just get more tanks.

This constant need for more tanks to house a growing number of fish is an affliction we affectionately refer to as MTS, or Multiple Tank Syndrome. :D

I'm a big fan of zebra danios please try to find a good home for them.

It depends IMO. I'm no expert but i think it depends on how long you have to wait until you can get a bigger tank. Since you only have 4 danios most people will only either use em as feeders or keep them in poor conditions. Do you have a friend with a suitable tank for a while?

why not buy the 20 gallon, put the danios in it with some other fish

then in your 10 gallon, put in dividers and you could keep 3 or 4 bettas in there!

that is a really good idea yvez, the only problem is space!!! my apartment is teeny and the only room without any fish (my bedroom) is about to get 5 bettas. i had planned to put the 20G there. i am going to look for some sturdy shelves that may be able to accomodate all the tanks. i also am thinking about setting up a 20 gal in my office. i have 1 betta there now and everyone loves him!!!!

inchworm - i am a proud MTS victim. i started my first 10 G in mid september, now i have 2 10g, 1 5g and 5 betta tanks (1-2.5g) already!!!!!

Had the same trouble with the amount of guppies we brought so took them to the LFS and they took them back but didn't give us anything for them. Not that we were worried as we were just happy they would get rehomed.

Well, if you are really worried about the danios, you are going to have to hold off on getting more bettas so you can somehow accomodate the danios you already have in an appropriate tank. It's not your fault you ended up with fish you didn't have room for, but I still kind of think that now that you have these fish it's your responsibility to find something better, not just leave them in the 10 gal.

But yeah if you really dont have room for a 20 gallon then i'd definately take them back, at least they have a chance of getting an adequate tank.

good luck :)

could you get just the glass tank only for a taller tank with the same footprint/base area? use your existing filter/lid/heater etc and just replace the glass? that way it wont take up much more room but will give you extra volume, and shouldnt be too expensive?
