My initial plan was to stock my tank with about 12 Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis (lemon tetra) and 12 Carnegiella strigata (marble Hatchetfish). However after doing more research I'm rethinking things.
I think the tetras and hatchets would like it warmer and more acidic than the current resident Laetacara dorsigera would like. I would still like to keep a couple different species of tetra, so I'm concentrating on fishes endemic to the Rio Paraguay where the Laetacara dorsigera are found.
I've been reading a lot here, as well as other sites.

It seems there is a good number of contender tetras.
Aphyocharax natteri - Dawn/Panda Tetra, it seems somewhat rare in the hobby and probably pricey.
Aphyocharax rathbuni - Green Fire Tetra, this is definitely in consideration, a big school would look nice against the Black background, but I'm worried the green won't stand out amongst all the plants.
Hemigrammus lunatus - probably not in the hobby, of it is it's expensive.
Hyphessobrycon elachys = Veilfin/Reed Tetra, smaller tetra, but kind of plain of a plain Jane fish.
Megalamphodus eques - Serpae tetra, colorful tetra but with a reputation as a fin nipper.
Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi - Black Neon Tetra, hobbyist staple, I've kept them before, not sure how it would stand out against the black background.
Megalamphodus megalopterus - Black Phantom Tetra, I've always liked these, and the red phantom cousin, again not sure if they would look good against the black background.
Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae - Red Eye Tetra, pretty common hobby staple, the silver body would stand out, but they are a pretty.active tetra, I'm not sure the tank is big enough for a decent school. Plus they are nippers as well.
Pyrrhulina australis - No common names, seems rare in the hobby.
Serrapinnus kriegi - Krieg's Mini Tetra, small nanoish fish, seems rare in the hobby.
I have been searching vendors and found one that may work. However many of these fish are sold in lots of 8. I personally don't like that as it limits me. My initial thought is 16 Green Fire Tetras and 8 Serpae Tetras.
Is 8 enough to keep the aggression down in the Serpae? Should I just go with 24 Green Fire? I would actually like no more than 10 serpae, but I can't do that buying in lots of 8. One thing I don't want to do is have two members of the same genus. I would think they would be too closely related and would lead to aggression and possibly hybrid tetras.
Any thoughts guys and gals?
