So I have a Betta that was found three months ago in the parking lot of my husbands work. he was in a vase and was healthy. My husband and his coworkers took him into the work center as the office pet. Two months ago one of my husbands coworkers decided that it was time for the betta now named Vinny to have a home home. And three weeks ago I was asked to fish sit, while Vinny's owner went out of town. I expected a house key.....I ended up with the fish and his tank at my front door.
I have never seen a fish tank so filthy and awful smelling. The water was yellowish brown with slime. Vinny had fin rot and a fungal infection. So What I did..Change and condition his water added a heater and medicated him. And I changed his diet from cheap fish flakes to frozen brine shrimp and dried blood worms. (I have had betta's and saltwater fish in the past). His water ph is 6.9 on average his water temp is being kept at 80 degrees F and i have been treating him with aquarium salt and fungus eliminator by jungle. His water filter has been replaced by an air pump and he is still in the 1 gallon tank he arrived in.
His fungal infection seems to have cleared up and his fins are growing back. And he is starting to act like a betta but he has a strange behavior that I have never seen before. He backs up into the stream of the air pump and shoots himself across the tank......and often you hear a little thunk as he hits the side of the tank. I think he is doing it because its fun and he is bored. Also maybe the bubbles tickle? But my problem is him knocking himself against the side of the tank. I have to have an air pump going because of the medication and its the smallest one i could find.....thoughts what to do to keep Vinny from thumping into the side of the tank?
