Rescued Some Fish Today

Hey, all,

I got a single trili cory to go with my other single trili and that seems fine. I got a single albino cory to go with the other 14, so that's fine. The other fish I got are 2 silver tip tetras and 2 colored skirt tetras. They all went in my 55g and I've noticed already one of the silver tips is missing a bite of tail. I'm going to a nice LFS this weekend and wondering what you all think I should do? Get some more? Set up another tank?

Are your longfin skirts bigger than the rest? I would suspect them in the chomping incident. Next likely would be the Serpaes, if they are mature. If you're going to keep the Silver Tips, you would want at least a shoal of 10. But I would try to find out who's chomping first. It may be either him or the Silver Tips needs to go. I would get some more Serpaes and Von Rios too. Your LF Blackskirts and the dyed skirts should school together.

Yes, the longfins are the biggest in the tank. I did suspect them right off. The serpaes and von Rios are very mellow.

What about getting more silver tips and put those in my cory tank?

That would be fine. I would move some corys to the 55 though. You have 16 in the 20 gallon, it's pretty close to maxed out there.

There's two things about silvertips: 1, they're very active so need as big a tank as you can give them - my personal opinion would be that 20g is too small for their activity level. 2, they're quite nippy with their activity, so as large a shoal as you can manage is best, and another reason why a bigger tank is better. I've got about 18 ish in my 40g, and I wouldn't want to drop numbers any lower, or have them in anything smaller. That's just my experience of them, but I would say you've got quite a few low numbers of shoalers, I'd be inclined to ring the lfs shop first but take some back and come back with a big shoal of something, (or up the numbers of one of the current shoals).

Would the silver tips get along with the tiger barbs?

I realize my shoaling fish are low in numbers, mainly because I keep rescuing fish and these are all that's left. In the case yesterday, these folks thought a pair of each fish was the way to go.

It seems that the skirts will do just fine with the black skirts, so I 'm not going to worry about them. It's only the silver tips I'm concerned about at the moment.

I don't have a LFS per se. The closest one is an hour away.
