Rescued Betta Advice Please....

Found this chap in a small tank with several red tailed sharks (at least 6!) and a swarm of tetra and he was not very happy so we took him home. Our tank was inherited as mature and all water tests are coming in good except for high nitrate content in our tap water. We are new to bettas and have been reading up he was very impressed with the live food he was presented with today (we were told he would only eat/need flake food)!!! His gills look a bit swollen but then similar looking to many pictures I have found on the internet. Any opinions advice greatly welcomed.

bettas are not the best community fish, they prefer to live alone although thre are some that happily get on with other fish, they are not very good with high currents they prefer still/slow moving water, although they live in rice paddies it doesn't mean you can keep the in a glass of water (which i can see you haven't which is good), have a read through there forum profile HERE too

Thanks for the link, We had scoured the betta section of this forum before we went to the shop as we loved the look of them but had not found that particular thread. Quite happy for Wafty to be king of his tank just wanted to make a very sad betta feel better! He is a very confident and active fish and already swims to the top of the tank to say hello to us. He is a bit fin nipped will this grow out or will he always have distinguished wounds of swarming tetra attacks on his fins? They are gorgeous fish and so inquisitive we have given up watching telly as it is much more fun watching him wander round his tank!!

the swelled gills may just be him displaying to his prety little reflection that allways manages to copy him no mater waht he does

damn those reflections lol
but seriously bettas ar gr8 and he looks nice
