A pet shop about 30 minutes from where I live has a little fish section of Tropical and Cold water they appear to know nothing about fish and had (I believe anyway) these errors

had 1 8 cm Paradise Fish and 4 small ones in Cold Water with a bunch of goldfish
and had a Nice red betta (which my mother bought and has placed in a tiny, tiny tiny tiny fish bowl (My mum is annoyed at me telling her what she should do)the betta was in a large coldwater tank with Zebra Danios and lots of goldfish.

I kindly rescued 2 Yoyo Loaches ($11.00 EACH....pricey loaches)labled as Reticulate loaches...Please rescue fishies from here......!!!!

(Im a relative newbie and these conditions for these fish may be fine so I may be wrong with all this)

they also sold "Painted" Indian Glassfish labled as Painted Glass Angels...........

well, paradise fish shouldn't be kept in groups but are fine in coldwater... and mis-labling fish is nothing to be upset over.

however, buying fish from a store with poor habits only lets the store know that it can still make money. so long as its more profitable to be crappy, the store isn't going to change. i know its hard to do this, but when you see a store doing wrong--just complain to the manager and don't buy any fish.

is there any need for heaters in oz? i thought the ambient temp would could the water temp up? i could be wrong though. Unless thats not what you were getting at and you were meaning that they were keeping coldwater fish in with tropicals which isnt the norm LOL

i was out in india recently and they dont use heaters - the outside temperature is so hot that they dont bother with heaters in the tank, only in winter time

poor fish.........

it does actually get quite cold in many places in oz in winter, the only places that dont are those up the top of the country (queensland, north west oz, northern territory)
i lived in perth for 25+ years & often 37c-45c in summer but drops down to 2-5c overnight in winter.( often 11-14c daytime winter) lots of places have snow in winter & they do have ski resorts in the eastern states.

bit of a myth thats its always hot & sunny over there!!!!
you would need heaters in tanks for tropical fish in most places there to keep the water t constant in winter.

Its currently about 5 degree's celsius at night and an average of 15 during the day......huge myth...LOL...

and I agree with that they end up getting more business..it seems to be a catch 22

Buying fish to rescue them is almost as bad as letting fish go instead of euthenising them, it feels really good, if you are inconsiderate, if you think about it it makes you just as bad as the employees and managers, worse even, because you know better and are purposefully contributing to fish being put into those conditions.

Winter in Oz = Our summer.
Summer in Oz = Hell on earth.
Trust me, i've been there in summer.
I know - growing up on a subtropical country where summer temps are well in the 40's 0C, I'm well aware.
But even so - our winters do and can go down to zero and day time temps 18C - might seem hot to some, but it's still winter. It's all relative ;)
