My friend has a betta in a 2.5 gallon tank. It's actually her little brother's but HE doesn't take care of it, so she does. She doesn't want to put up with it anymore and her mother told her to re-home it, so she asked if I wanted it as an early gift for the holidays. Maybe I can take him. Someone helped me out and said that it wasn't any use testing the water since it's only a 2.5 and if I could find a heater small enough, put it in the tank (keep it at about 79-82* F). He already has a filter and light. No heater. :( I'm going to ask my dad if I could 'rescue' him since mom doesn't think much about fish and dad doesn't either, but he doesn't really mind fish keeping. If I ever do get him, I want to upgrade to a ten gallon or 5 gallon so I can keep control of the water testing and temperature. I know where to get my supplies at, but what testing kit do you recommend that isn't too much money?

--Thanks. :)

First off i think its great that you want to "rescue" the betta.. i recently rescued a 5-6 inch male Dovii/wolf cichlid off a family member but the then it sadly died soon after due to jumping out of the tank through a small gap in the tank lid :(

IMO opinion ANY tank is worth testing no matter how big or small. Better to be safe than sorry :good:

I would go for a 10 gal as i would think a 5gal wouldn't be big enough if you want the betta to be happy long term :)

I know they are not "cheap" but I'd get an API liquid test kit. There are cheaper ones out there like test strip kits but they are not very accurate and to me it would just be like throwing money away. Go for an API :good:

The API is the most common and most used. It's not the cheapest to buy but then it will last you a very, very long time you may as well need to change it only because of the expiry date  It's the best investment in long term.

As for the tank, bettas are perfectly happy in a 5 gallon :) Not only is it better than a 2.5 anyway, all of my bettas live in a 5.5 gallon planted and they all look very happy in their tanks. They have plenty of room to swim around. However, if you have room, go for the 10 gallon! It's just that much more room for your betta :)

And I have to agree on the API test kit. It does last a long time. I have probably had mine for 2 years now and I'm not even 1/4 of the way through it...

It's great of you to rescue this betta! Rescuing a betta (or any fish for that matter) is one of the most rewarding things! :good:

An API test kit is good for over 800 water tests : good: it's date will probably expire before you use 1 up lol

My dad hasn't responded to my e-mail asking.... it's been a day or two now. :(

Even i rescued my current betta from my best friend, he was in a community tank with 2 silver sharks and 2 black moors... Not the best thing to do... :-(

Currently i have kept him in a 1L pot, cuz i don't have anything larger, but still he is visibly more happy now than he was in the community tank...:)

i am planning to buy my best friend a larger tank and transferring all his fish into it and taking his current 8g tank for my betta...

One of my friends is upgrading her tank to a 20 gal, and she said that she'd give me her ten gallon for the holidays. I was like: YAY! :hyper:

Not sure what my parents are going to think of it though...
