Hey all

i am going up to the peak district at some point to get some rocks for my tank (i know about all the different types that are ok for aquariums)

when i get them i want to pull all my plants out and do everything again

should i take all my fish out and put them into a couple of dark buckets before i do it?

Isnt taking natures bounty from the earth illegal :shout: Not that it ever stopped anyone, but i'm sure it is :p

taking a few rocks from the side of a river is barely going to cause the peak district to die :p probably will end up been a wood near my house not actually the peak district depends if i can get a lift lol

not as if im going to go digging up rocks from the ground :good: im too lazy for that anyways

I won't even bother going into it further as its not worth it :) Besides i'm not here to debate it, but the simply truth is, if you take 8 rocks for a scape, and so does another guy....then another guy and (for example) every year 100's of people sneak rocks away - where will the rocks be aye? :shout:

Can't blame you though. I'm trying to find black slate, or any slate similar and i cant find any, and i did quote out aloud to the people iwas with at the time "that i might just make a day trip to the peak district and see what i find." So i'm guilty of it too i suppose :p

if they did not price a rock at stupid prices at the lfs like £8 then i would buy them lol but they get there rocks from companys that blow the landscape up lol

you dont need to go into more detail i see where your coming from and the lake district is very delicate like any eco system thing is alot of people are too scared to go pick there own rocks because they dont know what is safe and what is not so the lfs can get away with pricing a rock up at stupid prices :p

its not even certain that i will get any depends if there is any the right colour and size and i would only pick one rock from one spot then walk a good bit to pick another rock not all from the same spot even if there all nice :)

do you know if i should take the fish out before rescaping a whole tank?

Have you had a look at the pinned topics? There are some stunning scapes on there using the different aquascaping methods... with different decor and what not. My method is called - bung it in :)

hey yeah i have had a nebbie and also looked at a few aquascaping sites some truely amazing tanks out there very impressive

but i still need to know if i need to remove my fish before aquascaping my whole tank because uprooting plants can cause pockets of deadly gas am i right or wrong??

no the time the air spends in the water isn't enough to effect the fish but they might get stressed out. moving them to a bucket is just as easy, whatever you're comfortable with really.

Cheers Simon I'll have a think about which to do much appreciated

On a few occasions i have left my fish in and completely rescaped - to date i havnt lost a fish this way. So its an option to leave them in. However more recently i've started opting to place my fish in a big bucket during any big rescapes - just through paranoya more than anything. I havnt had anything happen to make me do this, i just thought to myself why take the risk personally.

thanks for the input verminator :) appreciate it i think i will leave them in and keep a close eye on them if i think there getting stressed ill stop and set up a smaller tank to put them in

thanks all

You can use those big buckets/tubs you get from tesco... they're pretty big...40 odd litres

I recently did a rescape, i filled up my old 15l tank with tank water, put filter in. Then baged fish using the tesco freezer bags that id rinsed out, put them into the small tank then reaaragned and planted the tank. Then i did same thing with the bags and put them into the tank. water was same temp and conditions in both so no stress caused.

They love exploring there new tank, ive got danios so it was pretty easy to move them. Im goign to use this method again when i add some bogwood.

great ideas thanks all :) now to find all the stuff i need to scape it :D lol
