Fish Addict
Christmas day I discovered 1 swordtail female (Pineapple Girl 1) in my 55 gallon tank and 1 swordtail female (black marble ) in my 75 gallon tank with a few sprinkles of ich. After rounding up and removing all the cory cats I began treating both tanks with Quick Cure (malachite green & formalin), added salt, removed carbon, and raised the temperatures to 84 degrees in the 55 and 80 degrees in the 75 (this tank is difficult to raise the temp in). After 4 days of treatment the ich had not spread to any other fish but had only marginally lessened on the 2 affected girls. After some research I found some information that said in very hard water to dose with Quick Cure twice a day instead of once so I did this and after 3 more days the female in the 75 gallon no longer had any spots but Pineapple Girl 1 still had about 3 or 4 spots so I continued treating with the twice a day doses (25% water changes after 3 doses) for another 7 days on the 75 gallon tank and 10 days on the 55 gallon. (Both tanks were treated for 7 days after the last white spot was seen.)
I've been checking everybody daily for 8 or 9 days now and was thinking I'd gotten through it successfully until this afternoon when I found white spots again in the 55 gallon tank, this time on Pineapple Girl 2 (Pineapple Girl 1's sister). I just did a 25% water change and vacuum, removed the carbon, added salt and am slowly bringing the temperature back up again.
Should I try another round of Quick Cure or switch to a different product? One of the guys at my LFS suggested trying Aquari-sol (soluable copper salts) since the ich seems to be resistant to the Quick Cure. I tend to agree with him (for once) as far as changing products but does anyone have any other suggestions for what product to use?
The cory cats are still in their other housing so all that is in the tank currently is 6 swordtails.
