Is there a reliable cheap way to remove hardness from water.

Thanks, TheAquariumGuy

A small question that requires a big answer without some background detail on your tank and reason for lowering it... :)

I live in an area with really hard water and it understand this isn't preferable for most types of fish and shrimp.

The most reliable way to reduce hardness is to use RO water, or a mix of RO water with your tap water.

RO can be expensive and inconvenient, whether you invest in a home unit or buy regularly from an LFS.

Unless you have your heart set on a particular soft-water fish I'd recommend that you simply look for fish that will thrive in your tap water.  With a little care and research you can still keep lots of different species.

Ok :). Will shrimp be ok in hard water. I would have thought the excess calcium would be goof for them ??

I think that the shrimp will be ok in hard water. they're pretty hardy anyway
