Okiedokie, so I've decided (I think  ) that I'm going to get rid of my internal Juwel filter and replace with a nice Eheim Ecco 2234. But..... how do I go about removing the internal Juwel filter ? I've seen a few people post to say "with great difficulty" - so could you share your expertise please ?

you need a sharp knife (the type that has a retractable blade and snaps off in segments, if you know what I mean).
slide this down between the box and the glass and cut the silicon.
after removing the box, clean up the silicon left on the glass with a razor blade.

BTW the boxes go for around £20 on ebay, so put it on there for a bit of spare cash to buy fish with.

I tryed to remove my box, gave up in the end it just woudn't come out, was scared of cracking the glass, as it has sumpton cups on the box aswell, just replaced the filter with an etheim just put it in the box, removed the filter casing out, and don't have a heater in the box anymore.

Thanks Wolf. Sounds like a plan. Yep think it's called a Stanley knive.
Is the filter only attached with those slim line suction cups or anything else on top of that ? Am I actually going to have to cut through a layer of silicone  ??

Oh goodie and I can make some money too - that's always a good thing !! Especially as it's actually still in perfect full working order, but I just want better filtration.

let me no if you can get the box out, as i really wan't mine out as well, and i have tryed, but my partner said i would end up breaking the tank to get it out, good luck.

Yes, that's what I'm a bit worried about - or loosing a finger with that knive
Will let you know !

I removed my internal juwel filter in Feb.

I also used a stanley knife to separate the two top parts where the silicon is stuck to the glass. Once that was done i was able to remove the whole thing easily by hand. Maybe mine was just poorly glued.

:dunno:

I removed mine after a month of use (i didnt like the look of it) i used a fillet knife to cut through silicone then a stanley blade to clean up the rest.

Ryo beautiful tank, will have to try again.

Would I have to empty my tank to do this ?

Yes that's why it's so annoying.

:grr: :grr: :grr: that would be major inconvenient and a huge task !

But worth it if you can get it out, alot more room, and a better filter.

If you don't mind getting wet, couldn't you just lower the water level so it doesn't slop over the sides then go for it with the knife? I removed one from a Rekord 120, came out pretty easy - cut away the most reachable one first, then used a wooden spoon shoved down the back to create some room and some pressure, once I got the knife on the other bit of silicon it just popped off! I got a bit wet, but then i seem to flood the kitchen every time i wash up! (I'm a bit of a splasher!!!!) With a 180 you might need a stool or some steps so you can get in there properly!

We have external filters on our Juwell tanks too and considered removing the Juwel filters, but in the end we decided it was too much trouble and left them in and keep them running along side the externals for extra filtration!
