bit of advice please fellas, my regal tang has come out in a few spots so i had a word with the owner of my local supplier, he said it was just a case of mild ich and he would be surprised if my regal didnt have a few spots!! he put it down to a bit of stress (ive just changed my lights) none of the other fish are showing any signs of ich and the regal go's about his buisness as normal, my supplier has sold me a bottle of theraP to add to my water, any of you fellas got any words of advice? cheers :good:

Ive just had the same problem myself and lost about £150 worth of fish due to it :(
First question.. is the fish new to the setup?
second.. what type of system are you running.. Fish only etc?
If you have any inverts or corals in your system you will have to remove the fish to treat them.
At first like you mine only showed a few spots and no other fish where infected, all seemed well. I treated with a reef friendly product to be on the safe side. This had no effect on the white spot what so ever despite the claims on the bottle and the makers website. Within 2 weeks most of my fish where showing symptoms and the largest where badly covered. I then had to strip down my 100g tank with 90kg of rock in it to remove all the fish to quarantine and treat with a copper based med. The stress of the chase down and move caused the death of 3/4 of my fish as they where already weakened by the white spot.
So my advise to you is quarantine and treat the fish straight away while they are healthy, the longer you leave it the more you will loose! The fish shop should have advised you to qaurantine and treat the fish when you got it home and before you added it to your main set up.
Hope all goes well and you dont end up with a disaster like mine :(

sorry to hear aboot ya loss little  the tang is a original member ov my 1year old tank, there is corals and critters in the tank, i'd be gutted if i lost anything not just for money value but for all the hard work i've put into it :-( ta for your advice littleme

Its unusual for a Tang to develop white spot in existing system. Have you recently added new fish/corals or critters to the tank?
The theory goes with marine ich that once its gone from your system then its gone , and the only way to re infect is with other fish as carriers that may show no symptoms. As it has quite a long life in a dormant state it can live a good few weeks on rocks in the susbstrate on corals etc without the need to re infect ,thats why a system has to be left for between 4 - 6 weeks before you add the fish back, otherwise you risk the chance of re infection. So white spot can also come in that way too.
If you have touched nothing or added nothing to the system in the last month or so I would hold off with treatment as it may be something else. Typically it takes about 5- 7 days to reinfect so if the spots disapear after a few days then re apear in greater numbers after about a week you will know its white spot and will have to treat all the fish. The reef friendly products dont work so dont waste your time or money :(
I would PM SkiFletch as he is a bit of an expert and also had a tank whipe out like me last year and should be able to advise you better.
Fingers crossed its just a bit of a blip and not white spot, but i would get some copper based meds in to be on the safe side and get a QT tank up and running straight away just in case as They can take a week or so to cycle.

Well there's a lot of debate regarding Tangs, spots, and Ich. As littleme says, true Ich infections are terrible and can do a number on a tank quickly, littleme and I alas speak from experience :(. For years Tangs have been known as Ich magnets and people seem to notice that they "catch" ich when hungry or stressed. This has led to the theory that Ich is present in almost all marine systems and as such shows itself when a fish's immune system is comprimised via stress.

Often times Tangs when they show Ich are actually able to beat it if it's just a few spots. Heavy feeding usually helps the fish beat the parasite itself. However sometimes when the Tang can't beat the infection itself, or it's already moderate/severe you can have a full-fleged outbreak. Alas as with anything in this side of the hobby there is no black or white, just a whole bunch of gray area ;).

If you do decide to treat, there are really only two methods that work. First, QT ALL fish into a tank with a small amount of live rock, a sponge filter, a small powerhead, and smoe plastic pipe/decorations for cover. Do not use sand. Then slowly over the course of say 24 hours drop the specific gravity to around 1.009. Once the fish stop showing signs of Ich, leave the QT tank at 1.009 for a week. After which, slowly start raising the sg over the course of a few weeks. Just allow evaporation to take place and topoff with 1.026 water until sg gets back up to 1.026. At this point it has probably been a month with the display tank without fish. IMO, resist the temptation to add fish back until the display has been without fish for 2 months as the parasite can lay dormant for that long.

The other method is to QT the fish in the same manner as before but leave the sg at 1.026. Then you treat with copper, dosing as-needed to keep a level of 0.2 to 0.3ppm of copper. Repeated dosing will be necessary in the beginning as the piece of LR will absorb copper at first. Keep the fish at this level of copper for 1 week straight to kill the parasites. Under-dosing may not kill all the parasites, and overdosing can kill the fish so be careful with this method. Copper is however exceptionally effective at killing Ich. Once the week has passed you must again leave the display tank fish-less for 2 months to ensure all parasites die there without a host. Obviously stop dosing the QT tank and do a series of waterchanges to bring the copper down to <0.1ppm.

Ich is a PITA to try and eradicate and I realize what I'm proposing is less than ideal, but if the Tang does start showing spots beyond a handful or so, it might be a good idea to go through the pain of doing it. If another fish shows ich, go through one of the treatment methods immmediately, do not pass go ;)

YESSS!! my regal bluey got no spots today!! my cleaner wrasse looks a little tubby, and am sure he's just winked at me! :yahoo:

The reinfection is nothing to do with stress. Its just the natural cycle of the ich :( I watched mine over 3 weeks and at first there where a few spots, these got larger for a few days, then they dissapered alltogether for about 4 days. Then slowly after about a week I noticed small swellings that turned into spots but 3 tines as many. The mites fall of and go into the sand/rock work where it pupates, devides , then hatches again as many many more then seraches for a new fish host.
Hopefully yours was just a minor hickup, but I would watch your stock like a hawk for a good few weeks to be on the safe side. I gues I'm a little OTT about it, having seen what it can do and watching fish die and not been able to do a thing about it is something I wouldnt recomend :(
