Refugium Question

We went to the LFS and finally bought the mud and lights for our refugium. We thought we had extra fine sand and we were wrong. Our fish guys said to put a 1/2 in layer of fine sand on the bottom and then 4 in of miracle mud. Well we have crushed coral will that work or do we need the fine sand?

Ok I was wrong were putting it over the mud so the mud does not silt up. Will the Crushed coral hold it down?
