Redhump Eartheater

Well I`m hoping I`ve made a good choice as after spending almost an hour at my lfs today I finally chose 2 Redhump Eartheaters for my tank.
The manager there advised me that they are very peaceful SA Cichlids, he even went through some of the books there to show me some info on them and apparently once they begin to colour up they have a range of nice irridescent colours.

I`m in the process of acclimatising them at the mo so I`ll hopefully get some pics up later, no colouring yet so they`re quite bland/pale grey looking.

Does anyone else have any experience of these fish?

I havent got any yet but will soon once my 150G is up and running. How big is the tank? they can get 20-25cm long and do best in groups unless there a breeding pair. They need sand as a substrate a few hiding spots but also clear areas for them to swim and shift through the sand.

Edit: i miss read i thought you where talking about redhead geophagus not redhump geophagus these will get 15-20cm depending if there male or female but apart form that same as what i said above.

It`s definitely the redhump not redhead but I have all the required conditions either way, but I`m glad I got the ones that will grow to be the smaller rather than the bigger

They`re making themselves at home already and don`t seem to be wary at all. They`re nosing all over the tank

For all thats there small they still need big tanks. I would say 55G+ but 75g+ if you want other bottom dwellers with them. If your tank is big enough its best to keep a group.

My tank is about 360ltrs which I think is equivalent to 95G (US)? and I have Apistos (1 male, 2 females) and GBR`s (2 males, 2 females) which the Rh`s are meant to be ok with. I`ve got 2 at the moment, due to the lack of colouring it`s apparently difficult to sex them but if it turns out that I have 2 males the lfs have said I can return one and hopefully get a female for the other one. It`s going to be a waiting game to see what sex I have.

There`s plenty of room in there anyway, so fingers crossed
