Hi all,

I have a red tail shark, who very recently has started to chase and nip at one of my loaches (the larger one of two). He doesnt really bother with the other fish I have; 2 cherry barbs, 3 danios and a smaller loach, he has a quick dart towards them now and again, but thats it. The loach he chases is as big as him, but doesnt fight back! Should I be concerned?, he shows no sign of injury, should I put another similar fish in to calm him down? The tank is 90ltr.

Many thanks

This is how Red tailed sharks behave. They are agressive territorial fish and will attack similiar shaped fish. And any other bottom dweller for that matter.

The best thing for you to do would be to re-arrange the decor. This will create new territories and should calm down the RTS.
If the loach is showing no signs of injury, don't worry too much at this stage. But if it gets worse. something will need to be done.

Cheers

i know this is a common reply on here but 1st point to be made is 90l is not anywhere big enough for a rtbs this fish can reach 6 inches and gets territorial. they get more aggressive as the y grow and can be absolute sods. mine was in a 456 litre tank with cichlids and had to be re-homed for kicking crap out ofg among other fish a severum and a blue acara .

if you cant providse it with a bigger tank id say deffinately re-home even if it was peacefull

as for the agression take it from me it will only get worse as the fish grows

Totally agree ^.

Sorry i missed the tank size. The more space the better, and unfortunately there isnt enough space in that tank.

Thanks for the replies, just out of interest and with money being tight, what sort of tank size should I be looking at to be 'big enough'?

Thanks

id say 55 gallon tbh its gonna be 6 inch fish which is 1 mean territorial so and so. if you want to keep him and are looking at getting a bigger tank try ebay or aquarists classifieds. i believe there is also 1 called freecycle
