Red Shrimp?

hi all, in my lfs i saw some shrimp labelled red shrimp. are these the same as cherry shrimp? any info on them?

Hi laurasmith,

Did you see them at Creature Comforts in Totton by any chance? :)

I asked them to get them in for me and they are cherry shrimp. I bought six of them and although they are very small they are definatly cherry shrimp. Unfortunatly that shop will only label up things as it is listed from their import suppliers. The staff aren't that knowledgable either so I gave them a quick lesson on cherry shrimp lol!

I would definatly recommend you snapping some up before their gone, i've tried all the shops in the area and their the only place that have been able to get them because apparently they are seasonal. Cherries are such cool little shrimp, mine do tend to hide quite a bit but I guess thats because they are still quite small. When they get to their 1" full size i'm sure they'll come out alot more.
;)

Excellent! I would definatly recommend getting a couple more if you can, I have 6 in total. Shrimp are very social animals and prefer being in groups for especially safety, all my shrimp hang out in their own little gangs

All shrimp eat algae, dead plant matter, food missed by the fish (ie. flake, frozen blood worm etc), dead fish and fish poo! There are commercially available foods for shrimp also, for example Hikari Crab Cuisine. This product maybe quite hard to get hold of in LFS's but is available from here. I haven't tried Crab Cuisine yet but I have noticed my larger shrimp stealing catfish pellets from my cories, I chuck a few extra in now so everyones happy :D...

Shrimp are a very valuable addition to any tank as they do alot of cleaning up that we might miss or not be able to get to. For me they are great for getting rid of algae in my planted tank. Out of all the shrimp species Cherries are the best for this as they eat more types of algae than any other shrimp. Amano (yamato) shrimp are famously known to be "the" algae eating shrimp but I have found that they prefer to wait for food missed by my fish, unlike the Cherries. Another great shrimp for algae is the Rudolph Red-Nosed Shrimp. They are also very fascinating to watch because unlike other shrimp they actually swim and hoover around the tank. :D
