I have just set up a small growing tank and have bought a red sea prizm skimmer for it. I have never used one of these before so i read all the instructions and set it up. I primed it and it started to suck water up and then began to collect foam/bubbles in the collection chamber at the top, but should the sollection chamber also fill with water? i saw it starting to fill so turned it off in case i had done something wrong?

Yeah, it should only fill the cup with bubbles, not water. Sounds like it needs some tweaking...

what do you think could be the problem? i seem to have done everything to the instructions.

When i assemble it the instructions said to fill the first chamber with 1" of water then switch on. I did this and gradually the whole thing filled up? also is the breather pipe supposed to be so noisy?

The breather pipe can be noisy yes, sometimes you need to stick a piece of foam over the top of it to eliminate the whistling sound it can generate. There should be some means of adjusting flowrates into or out of the skimmer... Although (no offense intended here), the Prism is a piece of junk and I definitely wouldn't use one myself.

No offense taken i am starting to think the same :good:

Just read the manual again and it says something about two plugs? one to put the breather on to prime it and the other to regulate flow. I cant find where these are supposed to be. To get the thing going i stuck my finger over the breather untill water came up the tube. Could this be the problem?

why cant they just make something decent that just plugs in and does the job like my larger skimmer?

Cause physics makes it difficult to create a small foam fractionator (aka skimmer).

Tunze nano has successfully defied newtons laws of physics then :)

*hint* use a tunze nano

Indeed Musho, although difficult and impossible are two different words :)

I have got it working now but still unhappy with it. There doesn't seem to be a point on the flow valve that produces just the correct amount of bubbles to produce a steady flow into the top chamber. It either goes so fast that the chamber is full in a matter of minutes or so slow that nothing comes far up enough to catch anything in the chamber.
I'll have a look at a different type, the tank is 350ltr if you have any suggestions let me know. :good:

Well like Musho already said, the Tunze 9002 is a good skimmer although it does take up space (its an internal). The Deltec MCE300 for an HOB is a good skimmer as well. You can also try the TMC V2 line, but those can also be tempermental...

Ive got a red sea max skimmer prizm and first of without bruising your ego they suck and under skim what the box says but mine is adequate for my bio load, firstly the collection cup isn't meant to be full of water but you will find that it will ONLY skim wet but you can get some very dark skim after a lot of tweaking.
you need to adjust the flow rate on the water in tube. i have my water line in the riser tube about 1" away from the lip. as for the noise, mine is also very very noisy, Start off by padding out the pump with ..anything, Ive got some sponge, the air tube should be pushed into the collection cup (if you look under the lid of the collection cup there is two little notch things, one blocked and one that leads into the collection cup. the blocked one is for priming but i just pinch the tubing and restrict the air flow. when attached to the collection cup the sound is reduced as appose to when its left un attached to anything.(bad grammar but i think you should understand), ill post some pictures later but if you can id get a better skimmer they are pretty rubbish.
I'm looking into a new tank and skimmer as we speak, from a 90Lt system to a 250 or 350 system (including sump) just need to explain to my father the benefits of an extra 6" depth (looking aka 3ftx2ftx2ft and a 3ftx2ftx1.5ft)

anyhow hope that helps (buy tunze and deltec gear its soo much nicer, I'm swapping my stuff out received a tunze ATO and a deltec FLuidizor earlier today woo)

Also my LFS has some sort of TMC V2 line skimmer on their 6-7ft display tank and it pulls out some incredible stuff on low bioload...that or they just never clean it and let it evaporate leaving all the nasty behind  "shrugs")

Good luck what ever
