Hello all,

I've just been given a red jewel cichlid.
i need to know what i can put in with it....?
How many gallons to a single jewel?

He's not very big at the moment i'd say around 1 - 1 1/2 ins

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance :)

He's in my grow out tank at the moment - 29 US Gallons

The reason y i asked about tankmates is... i wanted to put him in with an Oscar but wanted to check before i moved him. That Tank is 105.

if i can't then i'll have to keep him where he is for the time being.

No, dont put it anywhere near an oscar mixing new world and africans generally is not a very good idea. the jewel will be fine in the 29 for the time being but be aware it can reach up to about 6 inches, and they are really active/skittish fish. You could do a pair of adults in probably a 50 gallon. I keep mine with syno. eupterus and they get along fine. I had a senegal bichir in there as well :rip: and he seemed to keep the jewels aggression in check. But the jewel will try to get violent with your oscar when he gets bigger. Hope that helped

Yes it has thankyou very much.
Tho i have heard that people have successfully put the 2 together.. this is y i asked. :)

Every fish has it's own indivdual personality and yes i'm sure it can and has worked...but the general concensus on jewels is that they are one of the most aggressive tropical fish, especially during breeding. You could attempt it, but I don't want to be the one to say it's ok.
