hi,
i have just been given 3 red jewels and i was wondering how to tell male from female, and what would actualy be the best ratio with these fish?

Thanks in advance, Vamp

The correct ratio is 1m/1f . Males usually have longer fins, more color, lots more blue sparkles, a slant like forhead, and thicker bodied. If you have any pcis i would love to sex them for you.

Ok, going by that description, i have 1 male and 2 females, tho one female has an extra black dot just past half way down her body, why is it only the one? i will try and get pics for you

Thank you for your reply

I would not make any decisions yet, but i would remove the "uglier" female and keep teh prettier one, assuming they are females. Some fish have different colorings. Pic's would be great.

What does the 'uglier' or the 'prettier' one have to do with it? never heard of a fish choosing bu good looks. will get picks later am at work atm. and apart from the spot in one of the females they are a much of a muchness when it comes to the better looking one.

Well, if you want to breed them, the prettier one makes prettier babies, self explainatory. Pick whichever you want, i dont care, it was just a suggestion.

and i appreciate the suggestion thank you, honestly i didnt think of the prettier baby thing, just found the thought funny with the male choosing the female over looks, kinda like sex and n city (reading the book atm) and he 'modelisers'. it was a weird day so it was entertaining to me. thank you for your advise, not sure if i will breed them yet, had read that they were hard to breed ??? but any signs of trouble i will remove one of the females.

Thanks again,
vamp

Them hard to breed? Not at all. There will be problems, but you migth get there to late. If he and 1 females pairs up, the other one will be killed.

ok, so if i take the male back n swap it for a female should the 3 females be fine togther? dont know how i will go with the swap tho. will post pics of them tomorrow to double check they are 2 females n a male.

ok well there must be a pair in there somewhere cause the female seems to be guarding a batch of eggs - didnt waste any time lol. so, can you give me any info on how to raise he fry?
thank you, kind regards, vamp.

edit - i still think the male will be going dont know bout the eggs. the now or soon to be ???? (dont know how that works with fish and eggs) parents are in theyr own tank atm. as much as i love the idea of breeding them i just dont have the room or the time right now.

Okay, first, i would remove the other female ASAP. Second, i would leave the fry with the parents for atleast a week. When feeding, feed them BBS ( Baby Birne Shrimp), you can hatch it yourself, or buy it frozen. I buy it frozen, easier, and better for them. Once the pair show signs of breeding, take the fry out. And put them in a seperate tank and keep feeding BBS. Thew more water changes, the faster they grow, the warmer the water, the faster they grow.

ok the female was removed last nite, tho i have a gut feeling it is male. mum n dad have eatin most of the eggs through the night.
thanks again
