I need some Help quick! My Red Devil is a male around 11 to 12 years old and is about 10" long. He has been laying on his side on the bottom of the tank for over three weeks now. He has not been eating and occasionally will swim around for brief moments once or twice a day. He always lays on his left side and now just his right eye appears to be bulging out a little. His water temp is currently 79-81 degrees, PH is 7.2-7.4, Ammonia is 0 ppm, and his Nitrite level is 0 ppm, he is in a 80 gallon tank. I only feed him Hikari Cichlid Gold pellets so he has no live food or other fish in his tank. I have been searching to try and find some help for him and have just discovered this forum, I hope that somebody out there knows what might be going on with my old pal. Thanks ahead of time for any help you my have.

Done well to have him this long, sounds like a bacteria infection with the fish laying on it's side plus the bulging eye which is pop eye.
Sadly pop eye is closely related to dropsy because of the build up of fluid, plus he's not eating so that isn't a good sign either.
You will need a bacterial med can you issolate the sick fish.

He is already issolated, he is the only fish in the tank.

Right sorry, what your location for the meds to use.

Not sure I understand that last part "what your location for the meds to use." ? I have not used any meds yet, would you suggest treating the popeye with epsom salt and Rid-Ich+?

No, you need an antibiotic like tetracycline or maracyn two, if in the uk anti internal bacteria med by interpet.

Tetracycline
Manufacturer: Aquatronics
A broad-spectrum antibiotic used in the treatment of gram-positive and some gram-negative bacterial infections. For infections of fin and tail rot, frayed fins, popeye, inflamed gills, mouth and body open sores/ulcers, livebearer disease, dropsy, Columnaris, and secondary infections such as fungal. Specific for livebearers and goldfish. Aerate the aquarium well when using. Useful for the control of some common bacterial diseases, including Aeromonias and Pseudomonas Genera and the Mysobacterial group.

Maracyn–Two
Manufacturer: Mardel
A broad-spectrum antibiotic for internal or external gram negative bacterial infections which can even be absorbed through the skin. Effective treatment of fin and tail rot, popeye, gill disease, dropsy (swollen body, protruding scales), septicemia (bleeding or red streaks on the body), secondary and internal infections. Effective even when fish won't eat.
Active ingredient: Mincycline hydrochlor.

Thanks! I'm in California so I will go look for tetracycline or maracyn two. Is one better than the other? Would Maracyn Two be better since he isn't eating?

The maracyn should be better on the filter than the tetracycline as tetracycline will wipe the bacteria colony out, good luck and fingers crossed with him being old bless him.

Thanks Again! I'm off to get some maracyn

Also you can get tetracycline flakes but there no good if he's not eating, you might have to be prepared for the worst though, as he dosn't sound to good, as he might not be strong enough for the meds, if not go in with half dose.

Well I've had my Red Devil on maracyn for 6 days now and he is showing no signs of improvement. Is there something else I can try?

Tetracycline but it will wipe your bacteria colony out, is it possilbe to issolate him.

I take it nothing has changed regarding his tank cleaning?? You do the same thing all the time each week and havent slackened off with water changes or filter cleaning?
As far as I know these fish live for around 10 years so maybe as with any old animal the internal organs start to shut down. It sounds like his kidneys are failing him causing the popeye.
Sorry but i dont think theres much you can do.
Maybe post in the New World cichlid section for more advice. :-(
