Red Cherry Shrimp

Do RCS like to be in groups and if so what number as i am thinking of getting some to add some other life to my tank.

RCS do well in groups. You don't really have to start with a certain amount, as they breed easily, so your colony will grow. What size is your tank? That will give a better idea of what size colony to start with.

What else do you have in the tank - RCS can become expensive snakcs for any fish with a large enough mouth.

+1 I lost quite a lot due to this! Shrimp only tank works best for them tbh. When I had mine in a fish tank with fish they didn't come out and didnt do much breeding.

When I setup a shrimp only tank I was over run! Ended up having loads.

wcmms, danios, dwarf cories, planning to have some guppies and a pitbull plec. nothing too big

I have great success with shrimp in a tank with small fish. I have had them with harlequins, copper harlequins cardinal tetras etc and they are really active. Make sure you have a lot of plants (and especially moss) for them to be fully happy.

nothing on that list that raises alarms. Might find them a bit shy and hiding due to other tank mates - can't be sure though.

I agree that there isn't anything in there that would eat them. If you have loads of plants then the shrimp will be much more active.

I spoke to an old guy at a small local shop recently and he told me that tropical fish and invertebrates should not be kept in the same tank as a lot of the treatments used on tropical fish will kill invertebrates. He seems to know his stuff as he's been keeping fish for over 40 years !!

I had 15 RCS in a well planted tank with harlequins, guppy, platy etc and hardly seen them. Once they was in a shrimp only tank they started breeding and was always out and about every day / night.

I suppose the higher the number you have in a tank with fish the more of them you will see.

It is true that a lot of fish treatments will kill shrimp ( if they contain copper), but that doesn't mean that they can't be kept together. All you need to do is set up a hospital tank on the rare occasion that you may need to administer medication (I haven't needed any meds for a few years now). That only needs to be a big plastic tub (you can get them cheap at B&Q etc, with a heater and filter in it.

Edit: @ScottayB, I started with 3 shrimp ages ago (obviously, I have added more shrimp to increase the gene pool), and I didn't see a great deal of them. But as the numbers increase ( I now have nearer 150) you see a lot more of them. I have tonnes of moss and plants and the tank is lightly stocked with fish, and the shrimp seem happy.

It's true , I've learned more in the last 2 years from various forums than I have in the entire 16 years I've been fish keeping!
