I have a long 20g with the fish that you can see in my sig. Well yesterday I noticed one of my plantshad a little red algae on it but today I noticed that alot of my plants have red algae all over it. So my question is what causes red algae and how can I get rid of it for good?

Red algae is the hardest to get rid of.
The best way is introducing SAEs as they are the only algae eater know to eat it. all other algae eaters, fish shrimp etc will not touch it.

Sorry but that wasn't helpful just confusing. :S Anyone think they can answer my questions?

But this seems to be talking about beard algae but I have no beard algae.

Beard algae is red algae.
Then if it is I must have a different kind of algae because mine just looks kinda like blood on the plants and is on mulitble of my fake plants and it seemed to start developing after I added some new fish to the tank this past friday.

It is possible it's Brown Algae. Sometimes that can look reddish. Can you describe the algae more? Is it like long strings? Fuzzy looking? What? Or any chance of a picture? :)

Wilder I just read the article you posted and that was helpful but it said that the common pleco will eat it while so far mine has proven not to touch it as of yet.

Annastasia it just looks like blood stains, if that makes since and sorry don't have a digital camera or phone with a camera.
