Hi there,

I changed my tank to Malawi and stocked it at the weekend. The LFS recommended Hikari Chichlid Excel Micro Pellets. I fed them for the first time last night and it took the fish a) a while to notice them floating and b) when they did, some struggled to consume as the pellets were a bit too big.

Is this because they were still shaken from the journey from the LFS or should I look into getting smaller pellets?

Thanks.

Jonathan.

Hi, the Hikari Cichlid Excel Pellets are only available in the micro pellet size and larger, you can try the Hikari Cichlid Gold Pellets which are available in Baby pellet size which is smaller than the micro pellet size.

I use a mixture of feeds, Nutrafin max tropical fish (spiriluna) flakes, Tetra Prima, Tetra Pro Vegetable and both nutrafin bottom feeder tablets and algae wafers. In addition to this I occasionally tie some cucumber, celery or lettuce to a rock and drop it in there, all of which they go mad for.

There are 3 species currently breeding in my tank and 6 Synos and approx 35 juves come throught the tank in 4 months, so have to assume they are happy and healthy on the mix I'm using.

If you have got some big pellets you can always just crush them a little, I originally used the Nutrafin Cichlid pellets and crushed them in a pestle and mortar before they discontinued it.

hi there,

Thanks for your help - they seem to have eaten abit better tonight.

after my move i have just checked water stats and it has 0.25ppm nitrite. i took about 8 fish out and added about 15.

is 0.25ppm nitrite just the filter catching up or should i be concerned?

Thanks,

Jonno.
