Recommend Me An External Filter

Getting a bit fed up of the built in Juwel filter in my tank so would like to get a decent external one.

I don't have the foggiest idea where or what to be looking for though. I've done a bit of scouring on ebay but it would be easier if I knew what brands, models etc to be looking out for.

So what decent external filter would you recommend me then?

Aquaclear are a really god hang on back filter. Ive used many of them on turtle tanks (turtles have a lot more waste than fish) and they have kept the water crystal clear, I'm currently using one on my fish tank also and its great. If you are looking for a canister filter I've read a lot of positive reviews about the Eheim line of products.

tetratec ex 700 does up to 250 litre tanks and only 13 watts or if its going to be or is heavily stocked then maybe the tetratec ex1200 which is only about 23 watts would be better, the ex700 on ebay is about £70 and the ex1200 about £85 so for the £15 difference id go for the ex1200

I'll second the Tetratec ex1200, fantastic filter. I've got 2 and if you shop around you can get a bargain. I used to run one on a 100l plec tank with no problem, it has a spray bar so you can manage the flow pretty well.

I have an eheim something, but it has an internal heater as well.... I will recommend as the additional unsightly presence of a heater is removed... it is efficient.

cant go wrong with an Eheim classic. eheims are some of the highest rated filters on the market (unlike the tetratec filters which are know for their leaks. google it, you will see)

the 2213 will do the trick on your 180L, but if you have the money, i always suggest going with the next model up just for added filtration.

I had THREE running and swear by them.

I personally would have an ex1200 on the 180 though, I have had both ex700 and ex1200 on the 180l and the 1200 (obviously) ran better

odd, i wouldve suggested the eheim classic 2215 as minimum with a recommendation to get the 2217 if possible

the 2213 is rated for a tank slightly larger than the OPs tank, so it would be ok. but like i said, i would suggest going with the next model up (2215)
