Over the next few weeks Im going to start assembling the kit for a 120L tank and Im thinking that due to the messy inhabitants (2 blackmoors) I might be better of going to an external filter.

Im thinking one of the eheim professional range but which one? Is there much difference between series 1,2 or 3?

Also, if I do go external its going to be at the same height as the tank, i.e. on a work top rather than lower down. Would this be a problem?

I would recommend Fluval 200 but I'm just a newbie

I've heard that Fluval internals are good but that there externals arent so. Eheim seems to get the plaudits when it comes to externals.

i would recommend tetratec externals i got a ex1200 second hand and it still works like a dream

i know you was not really looking for reccomendations more which eheim is better but though i would give you the heads up on tetratecs :)

I using a FLUVAL 205 and can not fault it. Been running like a dream since i had it and i got it second hand from a mate and he thought it was a great filter to .

What about the issue of having it stood on the same level as the tank, will that be a problem?

Another newbie here, but I'll chime in on the Fluval 205 on my 26 gallon. Been running it for almost 3 months, and it has been awesome so far. Very quiet and apparently good flow into the tank.

If you go with Fluval, just be conservative when cutting the tubing that attaches to the tank. Leave more at first rather than less - I almost cut my outflow valve tube too short - you can always cut off more length if needed.

I am 99.9% sure non off them will run at the same level as the tank as they need gravity for them to function.

Someone might prove me wrong though

If thats the case I guess I'll have to stay internal.

How come you just can not put it on the floor ? Ya fishtank not on the floor is it ? mine sit in under the fishtank stand away in the cuboard

Its going on a kitchen worktop so by putting it on the floor it would be in the way. I've been having a look at the instruction book for a fluval online and it says it must never be more than 1.4m below the waterline, doesnt say anything about it being level from what I can see.

But looking at the instructions, I think its a no go.

On the instruction DVD i got with the Fluval 205 it says something along the lines off it must be x amount under the water line and no more than so amount but i sure it also say the top off the filter must be lower than the bottem off the tank

A canister type filter is always supposed to be well below the water line. The thing works by siphoning water from the tank and pumping it back in.
A hang on back type filter works fine at the same level as the tank, it hangs on the tank rim.
Internals, of course, always have a great suction source because they sit inside the tank as do box filters.
