I bought a tank today its an interpet 48 litre tank but I dont like the look of the filter, I know its a cheap tank etc.. etc... but its the onli size I can fit.

I am not going to be putting many fish in and not large ones just want to use it and learn the basics really and when I get a bigger tank and more expensive tank I can use this one as a quarantine tank.

So Can any one recomend a good filter what is quite quiet because its in my bedroom. :) thanks

Does the tank have a good solid lid on as that will reduce the noise, not one of the cheap bendy plastic ones. get a fluval 2 filter there not too loud. to make a filter quiet push the outlet further down into the water however remember doing this also reduces surface tension which means less oxygen in the water.

yes the lid its quite thick plastic, so will i not need an air pump?

No you dont need an air pump as long as your filter is creating enough surface tension. what was the make and model of the filter they supplied you and what makes the tank?

its an interpet x box fish tank 48 litre, and it was a standard interpet filter, thinking of buying a new decent filter and saving the interpet one as a spare.

Any of the internal filters would be quiet. They get their sound deadening by being surrounded completely by water. I have a Fluval 4+ in one of my larger tanks and can't hear it when standing right next to the tank. They are not as nice looking as hang on back or canister filter because they are visible inside the tank, but they are very quiet.
Opening up the air flow path to that or any other filter means having some noise from the air being drawn through the filter's discharge nozzle.

Ok thanks for the replys I have bought a Fluval 2 for around £17 I think it was, should arrive after christmas, I also bought some of that eco sand for the tank so I can plant some plants.
