My in-laws got me one of those one-gallon bowl (if it's even that big) hang-on-the-wall fish bowls. What can I do with this thing other than punt it into the garbage can? I suppose I could put a Betta in it. I would prefer putting a sponge filter in it but it would probably look goofy with an air tube going into it, and since it's hung on a wall, where does the air pump go? I'd rather not put something in it without a filter so I am thinking about just junking it instead of putting some poor fish through the suffering of living in it.

Altough it's best not to complain, add a betta, maybe ghost shrimp.

IMHO its a bit small even for a betta, some people say a 1gallon bowl is ok for betta's although personally i wouldn't go for anything smaller than 2gallons.
If i were you i would just put a couple of small shrimp or large snails in it (only if the tank has a lid though, particularly because shrimp and many types of snails can get out of un-covered tanks) and some aquatic plants  .

You can put it in a large aquarium as a decoration; I've seen people do this with bowls and bottles- it actually looks kind of nice!

But if it doesn't look nice anywhere...scrap it.

about 5 amano shrimp? with some java moss. would be cool. :good:

Or, still remember, you could do a Dutch aquarium, with that size, maybe a shrimp or 2, but if you get enough lighting try Dutch.

I'd be more worried about the weight of it when filled with water, from what I've seen of them they're not exactly built with safety in mind. Maybe it would be easier and more practical to make it a non-aquatic planted environment? It would look nice with cacti maybe, or something similar.

I wouldn't put anything alive in it, honestly. Perhaps you could just put some cute decorations or a few nice fake plants in it to make look pretty, if you don't want to bin it. I definately wouldn't put any fish or shrimp in it, though.

ooh, that one sounds like a good idea! :good:

I once got a half gallon glass bowl from someone, right now it is being used a storage container in my closet. I was also given one of those little plastic hex betta tanks. I used it to hatch my rainbow eggs, it worked really good.

That's what I was going to suggest. You could also plant it with some hanging succulents like rose moss(Portulaca grandiflora).
