i recived a notice from petsmart about this and i wasn't sure if anyone else had recived it.

if you marine land heater is made of all black plasic, this is a stealth pro submersible heater (100 or 200 watt) it has been withdrawn.
i called them this afternoon. these heaters have been reported to overheat and crack. i did talk to the representive of marineland, they said if you bought one at petsmart you can return it to the store for a full refund. if you bought yours at another store, you can mail it back to marineland and they will either replace it with a glass one, or refund you your money.

i am including the number to marine land for those who might want to ask them your own questions. this recall is only for 100 watt and above, lower levels will not be affected.

This has been a known issue for some time now. I have seen numerous posts an many fish forums where fish keepers reported overheating or cracking etc. Marineland had no option. I have also had numerous issues with their MaxiJet powerheads.

If you look into the corporate structure you will discover that the aquarium stuff is a part of a larger PET division which in turn is one part of a conglomerate that makes many things totally unrelated to pets.

It looks to me after the acquisition binge the company went on the next step was to wring greater profits out of equipment by lowering the cost to make it. It appears that the quality of a number of great products has been lowered as a result. I had used both the heaters and the PHs for a few years before the more recent ones I and others had bought started breaking regularly. I do not know if they have addressed all of these issues yet in terms of correcting the problems.

No- just talking about the Marineland problems and the bigger picture in general for any who might be interested.

You can find more info at the Wiki link here Spectrum Brands or just Google Spectrum brands :D

Petco recalled them as well. Honestly I didn't sell that many of that brand though.

i was surprised its my favorite heater, glass ones make me nervous.
i was actually impressed by pet smart, i think because i bought this guy on my pet perks card they knew i had one and sent me a letter explaining it. something my local fish store did not do, i am very much impressed by this. i know pet smart and petco get slammed a lot for the quality of there fish though here. they do however sell great aquarium products that we can afford. honestly the customer service of sending out this letter and dealing with it quickly is impressive.

maybe i should send them a letter of appreciation.

I was also impressed. I actually almost dumped the letter without reading it because I thought it was junk mail. When I took the heater back they didn't have any that were the same price. The difference was only a dollar, but they still went ahead and adjusted the price for me even after I offered to cover the buck.

Overall, I love my local Petsmart. The main girl I see is very knowledgeable and gives good advice. The tanks look great and I rarely see dead fish. We have two other Petsmarts and a Petco in the area, and they're a mess- dirty tanks, dead fish, tons of snails. Next time I go to the "good" one I think I'll tell the manager how great his staff are.
