Rebuilding After A Tradegy

In a paper to be published in a leading research journal, one of Britain’s most outspoken academics will argue that men have larger brains and higher IQs than women, to such an extent that they are better suited to “tasks of high complexityâ€￾.Richard Lynn, emeritus professor of psychology at Ulster University, who has caused outrage in the past with claims that white people are more intelligent than blacks and that criminal traits are genetic, will publish the work with Paul Irwing, senior lecturer in organisational psychology at Manchester University. The study, due to be published in the British Journal of Psychology in November, concluded that men not only have larger brains but also higher IQs, on average by about 5 points, than women....Dr Irwing said that she had initially been reluctant to take part in the study arguing that she would have personally preferred not to have discovered that men had a biological advantage.“I came from a perspective that I would like to believe that all people, whether men or women, were equal in potential achievement,â€￾ she said.(This is by a female who is reluctant to slight other females, but due to testosterone, certain areas that involve mathematical skills are larger. Thats why they say that males tend to be better at mathematics on average, and females are better at other things.)=====================================================The University of Western Ontario psychologist reached his conclusion after scrutinising the results of university aptitude tests taken by 100,000 students aged 17 and 18 of both sexes.A focus on a factors such as the ability to quickly grasp a complex concept, verbal reasoning skills and creativity - some of they key ingredients of intelligence - revealed the male teenagers had IQs that were an average of 3.63 points higher. The average person has an IQ of around 100.The findings, which held true for all classes and levels of parental education, overturn a 100 year consensus that men and women average the same in general mental ability. They also conflict with evidence that girls do better in school exams than boys. But Prof Rushton, who was born in Bournemouth and obtained his doctorate in social psychology from the London School of Economics, argues that the faster maturing of girls leads to them outshining boys in the classroom. And since almost all previous data showing an absence of difference between the sexes was gathered on schoolchildren, the gender difference could easily have been missed.'It looks like up until late adolescence, the females have the advantage over males because they mature faster, which masks the underlying difference, he said.Although experts have accepted that men and women differ mentally, with males averaging higher on tests of 'spatial ability' and females higher on verbal tests, it was assumed the differences averaged out, leaving no difference in overall intelligence.Prof Rushton believes the differences are directly linked to brain size, with other studies showing men having slightly bigger brains than women.'We know that men have larger brains, even when you take into account larger body size,' said the researcher. 'That means there are more neurons. The question is what these neurons are doing in a man - and they probably have an advantage in processing information.'It is thought the difference may date back to the Stone Age, with women seeking out men who are more intelligent than them in a bid to pass on the best genes to their children.'Some people have suggested it evolved because women prefer men who are more intelligent than they are for husbands,' said the professor.'Just as they prefer men who are taller than them, they also prefer a male who is a little ahead of them in IQ.'And I'm not here to start some sexism argument. But I don't think anyone in their right mind can come yell at me for being pissed that someone just said that men are stupid with the brains of a goldfish. How can you defend that statement. It's neither cute nor funny in jest or not, because it's so overused now adays. Too many people say men are stupid blah blah blah. Actually, it's the opposite. In general males have a slight more potential for intelligence that females. I'm defending men because I am one. You can't sit there and bash me for it when people insult me for being the sex that I am.

i think she was more referring to her fiance having the mind of a gold fish not other males. ok so she said typical male. its just some stupid stereo type, like blondes are stupid, and all women do is talk a lot and shop, or people who wear black or listen to new aged punk music are considered emos. Dude she was joking get over it. i know alot of females that are blonde and they are not stupid, i am female and i dont enjoy shopping and i dont talk that much, i also wear alot of black and i do like the new aged punk music but i am defiantly not an emo. i am sure you have referred to a member of the opposite sex as a typical female, involving different points i have said. metalcherry, i am sorry to hear of your lose, similar thing happened to my fiance recently, tho he was lucky enough not to lose all his fish, tho he did lose some.Best thing i can say is when something like this happens dont give up, we all learn from our mistakes, or other experiences.Sorry i cant help you much with the stocking of your tank.Good Luck, Kind regards Vamp
Hey now, at least we don't find the need to complain about everything.
??? isnt that the same kinda thing you are having a go at metalcherry about?

Some people are very sensitive, they will take anything as a blow against their character. There are other forums and places where people go to fight and ague over nothing, so please do not turn this forum into a ring.

i took a log of what happened over the two days to an aquarium shop

basically wednesday i cleaned the filter - i stagger clean this i replaced the carbon last week and this week i replaced the filter foam.

thursday 11pm fish were fine, no problems with eyes, no blood in fins etc - i check this every night just to make sure that everything is ok. the heater was working and the water was usual warm which is usually is.
3am (fiance woke up to hang up some washing he forgot to do) he saw that a pleco and my black shark had died (black shark had actually turned white), the oscar was curled up in an arch and the other 2 plecos were on their sides but still alive, the convics seemed unaffected. when i tested the water, it was ice cold.
5.30am oscar stopped making occasional movements and seems to have given up, big pleco frailing about the tank, little pleco is lying at the bottom like before but still alive, convics are still unaffected. but all fishes eyes were white, as if it was from the inside out.
7.30am oscar is dead in arch shape, both plecos on backs, convics unaffected (they later died that day)

i took this log to the fish specialist, told him of events, he thought that it was a filter problem because i had just replaced the filter pads but as soon as i told him that the heater had broken down that night and by 3 the water was ice cold he told me that this sounds like the problem and that it was an ammonia or nitrates poisoning.

i dont really know much about this sort of subject as its never affected any of my other fish in the past and the man has always been right on other problems i have experienced,

p.s. sorry i did mean heater, i keep calling it thermostat lol

i think the moral of the story is to have a spare heater. just incase of the likleyhood of such events happpening again.
sorry for your loss, my regards, community

lol apologies to males out there who dont fall under that reference, :p i never ment it to cause offence but fiance is very forgetful these days (as is quite a few men out there that i know but i guess women are the same...sometimes lol)

anyways, thanks for the advice, ive began cycling the water with a temp filter for now until i can get a new filter, scrubed everything, got heater etc just need to get the tubes etc set up correctly and start getting the items ready

someone told me that i should buy some neons for now to get the tank ready, just to make sure that it can be safe to start rebuilding the fish again, is this correct or is there any other ways to get it ready so i dont have to sacrifice any little fishes to make sure its ok for big fishies.

Really antsy incase it happens again, i dont think i could bare the thought of another fishes death on my concience

my tank is an 80 gln tank

ArauraDiscus, chill. Just a joke buddy.

I think changeing the foam in the filter might have caused the tank to begin cycleing...with the fish present. That seems to make the most sense.

Guppy dude, you just want to keep this going dont you. You didn't need to say that because I obviously was done with it, But telling me to chill will just piss me off. I'll chill or be pissed when I so choose. Understand?

Actually i was checking in to see if miss metalcherry had gotten her problem solved.

I've no intent to insite harsh feelings here. Anger begats anger. Maybe thats somthing YOU need to understand. :good:

That tank is perfect for a few species of rainbowfish, hope that the "restart" of the tank goes well.

PS: to others, stop arguing, you impress nobody.

There are two ways to get your tank ready (a.k.a "cycled") -- and neither involve Neons! What that person was referring to was doing a cycle with fish. But for that you need a hardy fish like some danios or something. Neons don't really qualify as hardy (in fact, I've always found they're a great indicator of water quality - they drop over dead at the slightest water problem!) What you'll want to do if you can't bear the thought of risking any more fishy deaths is a "fishless cycle." Have a read of some of the pinned topics in the beginners section. Basically what you're going to do is add pure ammonia to the tank water to simulate the ammonia that would be produced by fish waste, that starts to build up all the good bacteria in your filter. You'll get ammonia and nitrite spikes during all this which could kill most fish. But you won't have to worry because you won't have any fish in your tank yet! Once you've cycled this way, you're free to add all your fish at once, safely.

Perfect
thank you so much for your advice :)
just going to have a look through the info topics :D

thanksie xxx

I both understand and disregard that fact. If I want to be angry, I don't hold it in. Thats my curse and my gift. I don't let anger boild in me, and I speak my mind, which may piss people off, but people have to udnerstand my personality and deal with it, or ignore it. Because it's there and I am what I am.

minds like goldfish!

Hey! That is obviously a direct attack against me and my username, so I shall now pitch a hissy fit! :grr:

(Or not! :p )

Anyway, sorry about the fish dying. :( It does sound like it was the filter. Looks like you have gotten some good advice, though.
