Ok this is a really off topic question, probably not even the right forum but, when i went to my lfs they had small turtles for sale, they were like 10cms long max fully grown and my sister fell in love with them. What i wanted to know is it possible for a turtle to live in a tropical fish tank? I know they will need a floating rock and other things, and probably produce alot of waste, but is it possible

i dont actually want one, i just want to answer my sisters question so she will leave me alone haha

pretty random sorry

turtle or terrapin? people keep them, in paludariums, where you have water & land in the one tank, they do make a mess & can get quite large but people do keep them.

no it was definantly a turtle, murray turtle or something they were minature though.

I am quite happy keeping tropical fish, thanks for answering my question hopefully my sister will leave me alone now :)

Turtles are kept but they need a place to rest and they will eat small fish. We do have a section of the forum intended for things like turtles if you scroll way down to near the bottom. I have only a minimal knowledge of turtles but people in that section probably could help you out.

My kids have a painted turtle and he's extremely messy. I would think it would make a huge mess out of your fish tank> I keep ours in a tank by himself. I was going to put fish in his tank until I floated the bag in the water and he was trying to attack it. They will definitely eat fish.

i successfully keep fish with a turtle but she does eat a few here and there. the one thing i always point out to folks who want a turtle is that they are CRAZY messy, require large tanks with massive filtration and even then you have to do waterchanges once or twice a week due to the nitrates. not to mention they live for 20+ years. that is a LOT of commitment. and while the turtle may be small now, they grow like WEEDS when they are little. so getting a 2 inch turtle, within a year (if kept properly) will be over 6 inches. and need a 10 gal of water per inch of shell. water must be 2-3X deeper than the shell length)= large tank with incredible filtration.
turtles are a lot of work and a LOT of money to properly house (tank/large canister filter/water conditioner/food/vitamins/ uva-uvb light/heatlamp/basking area/heater/syphon for waterchanges and a few miscellaneous things). i know my set up initially cost me around $600. so tell you sister that and see what she has to say.
they are cute and extremely cool critters, but a LOT of work(lots of maintenance) to keep healthy and happy.
cheers

Also to add, turtles and terrapins are one and the same, (the term terrapin is just more commonly used in the UK)

If they do indeed just get to 10cms then they could possibly be musk turtles which will get to between 3.5" to 5" depending on gender,
However make sure you check the exact species before purchasing as many common species will get much bigger and could easily reach shell sizes of upto 1 ft in diameter,
