there's a right batty old woman who lives down my street.... well in fact there's a few but one in particular seems to have taken a liking to our fish. i just popped the shop at the weekend and she stopped me in the street asking about our Oscar. apparently she talks to him through the window in the daytime and wants to come and look at him. but it really made me laugh.... she asked what he is, I said he's an Oscar, a new world cichlid she just looked at me blankly and said well that means nothing to me.

if you don't keep fish it's not going to mean anything to you, so what answer do you want to 'what is he?' makes me alugh i've been asked this a few times by non fishy people and i've yet to work out what answer they really want me to give!

tell them it is a fish :p

my new sig is good, but your new avatar rocks :good:

if they ask spceifically what fish say a tropical fish

i'm half tempted to make up some stories, see just how much she'll believe

Hi,

I was asked last week by my friend's son (4 years old) - pointing at one of the tanks "are they wet in there?"

Lol.
The only experiences i had really along those lines are with my goldfish- their tank is in the kitchen, the first room you go into and the goldfish tank is the first you see- for some reason, a lot of people over time have asked me what sort of fish they are, one guy who came in to fix the boiler even asked me if they were tropical fish "like oscars or something" and i told him they were common and comet goldfish and he said "no way, i never knew goldfish could look so nice" .
One of my friends though has a little toddler girl, she calls me the "fish doctor" sometimes as so far i've always helped out my friend (who is also into fishkeeping) whenever they've encountered problems in the hobby with their fish. She loves the goldfish since they are so huge and colourful, sometimes she'll just stand there pointing at the goldfish for ages which is very cute, she loves been given a handful of food and being held over the tank so she can feed them :good: .

I hate it when my friends tell non fish people that we meet that i keep fish, it always leads to them asking what kind of fish and when i tell them ive got quite a few tanks and what a few of them are they look at me like im some sort of super boring nerd/madman and usually avoid talking to me again so now i just say "oh the usual stuff, guppies neons and that".

pmsl

see i just can't understand why it would put people off. if i got introduced to someone who had virtually any hobby and was really into it and had some different and unusual stuff, I'd wanna talk to them more and be trying to blag an invite to they're house to nose at stuff

we tend to get grilled by tradesmen as well. whenever we have anyone round to do work they're always fascinated by Oscar and asking questions. to anyone who knows about fish you may like oscars and be interested but they're hardly something unusual, but i guess to non fishy people any 10" fish is something special.

You raise an interesting point, but perhaps some of us are "fish nerds". Doesn't mean we are general nerds that have the social skills of a peanut though!

There's a nerd of some sort in everyone, waiting to get out..

Squid..!

let my nerd out a long time ago

no not Ian :p

no not Ian :p

Talking of the inner nerd - well, my other hobby is growing vegetables. I have not one but two allotments.
I *really* need to get out more

No wonder my kids think I'm tragic.

My friends don't even know what a platy is. I feel embarassed cuz I seem like a geek, most kids my age keep goldfish in bowls, I've got 3 tanks and know all my fishies' species. My friends have stopped asking me what kind of fish I have. But they love it when I make the fish eat out of their hands. :p

When people find out I keep fish - well, mostly shrimp at moment - I always get asked if have piranha. A lot of people imagine these are the ultimate pet for fishkeepers for some reason.

The other thing that happens is people trying to out-nerd me by claiming they kept some rare or exotic fish and expect me to fall over in a fit of admiration and envy. It usually turns out to be a silver shark, a very common fish when I was younger.
