Hello, yesterday i got two new cichlids as i noted in the forum and one of them went awol. I quarantined him and he came out of it but when i tried to put him in with the other fish again they chased him so i put him in his own tank. I assumed he was stressed and I told her the other fish were being aggressive RIGHT AWAY. She told me if he died to bring in a water sample and that all fish were guaranteed for 48 hours. Well my water is fine I test it daily for Nitrites, ammonia and nitrates. I dont have ph test so i couldnt say for that but all the other fish in the tank (7 of em in a 40) are fine. INCUDING the other fish i bought with the one im trying to return. On top of it all all the other fish in my tank came from the same tank at the store.
This morning first thing i called and told her i would be bringing him back to just exchange for another as he was not getting along with the other fish and she said that would be fine as they were guaranteed for 48 hours.

When I arrived she was very rude, and offensive to me. I tried to explain to her that the aggression is spread out in larger numbers and since they have much larger numbers than I, this fish wasnt picked on so much in their tank. She was nothing but rude to me (as she is every time even when i talk to the boss prior and he tells me its all good). She assumes its my water, which they are free to test but they could at least take my word for it. She told me i changed my story when i said exactly what im saying now and have said every time. Finally she refuses to exchange my fish or sell me another (i wanted to exchange that one and get another also so spend ANOTHER 10 bucks at her store). He said he wanted to test my water and started testing what i brought him in. If i was being dishonest i could have told him that was the fish tank water i had him in but I even said that it was the quarantine water, and that i tested the water and all was fine. He said he would do nothing for me until i brought a sample in (which again they would have no idea if i brought wate3r from my 40, 25 or ten). Which is fine i test the water and its clear i just dont appreciate my intelligence and honesty questioned by ignorant people that dont have a clue about what they are selling. And i probably left out a chunk more of stuff they did but there is too much to type. I informed them i wont be doing business there anymore she said something along the lines of good (cuz the twice ive had to return things due to THEIR misinformation was such hard work for her) and i will be speaking with the owner at his earliest convenience. There was even other cashiers looking at me apologetically because i deal with them all the time and have nothing but a decent, polite repoire. Anyway now the lfs is giving me carpal tunnel syndrome and i dont wanna give them THAT satisfaction either. Just thought u all might like to hear this stuff and give me anymore ammo when i speak to the boss in the next few days cuz this place is HORRIBLE from overstocking to misinformation to poor customer service. ^$#%$#%$#%$#%#@#$@ ;)

Dude man I really feal bad for you. I would never go there anymore if that happend to me .just tell them if they have fish do what they are telling you to do and see how far they will get.

I feel your pain! So much for customer service.

The lfs where I've been getting my fish has the same policy about testing the water. You have to bring in a water sample. Hmmmm.....so IF my water conditions were poor, would I bring in the water from the poor tank or water from a healthy tank or even tap water??? Seems like a waste of everyone's time.

So are you going to setup a separate tank for the two new fish?? This could be an opportunity to add another tank to the household!

I hope you have another lfs in the area you can go to. If so, I'd go back to the rude chick and ask "Have you always been an arse h*le, or did you practice your whole life?"

Haha i said i by no means am a fish expert but i do research and this is what i found....

She said that they have plenty of fish experts around that store (when half the time there isnt even enough staff to cover everyone in the store, and ive been several times miseducated by them.) Yesterday i bought 3 ottos and 2 cichlids. spent 40 bux there. i kept the cichlid that adapted to my tank fine and all i wanted was to exchange that fish and get another. The ottos are fine in the ten gallon (they are cleaning up the algae BEAUTIFULLY i might add ;)) When i walked away she asked if i wanted the fish i brought back i told her i wanted nothing from her and that she should go help the other customers waiting patiently for service since another gentlemen had since come along and was helping ("helping" see: brushing me off) me. I then left and apologised to the woman who genuinely looked simpathetic to my situation and she has always been nice. So i apologised for the situation to her and wished her a nice day. Now i am going to ride uphill in the rain across town to check out a store ive been told from the beginning is a much better store (just far less convenient for me) See ya in a bit! ;)
EDIT::
And when i spoke to her she told me that i would only need to bring in water if if it died. It didnt. They were making like its alive so we cant do anything for ya. Had u killed it and brought it in all would be good (even though it would be the opposite if i brought it in dead ;))

Yea the LPS I used to go to to get my fish won't exchange any fish, if they misinform you, you can donate back to them so they can re-sell it. I was so pissed when they told me a peacock eel would fit in my 10 gallon and that my male betta and paradise gourami would do fine in a 10 gallon together. I found out the hard way to never trust what a LPS or LFS employee tells you.

Sorry to hear about your bad time at that LFS. :(

Just dont go back! Word of mouth is evrything, so tell people of your experiences there. Dont flame them, just tell others what happened and about the poor guality service you recieved. After all, you are the customer. Some shops just dont care.

Maybe try and rersearch your fish before you even go to a shop. If you knew they were selling you bad combo's of fish, you wouldnt have bought them wouldnt u? Its up too the customer too you know.

Our "reputable" LFS has a 14 day return policy, but they will only refund you 50% of the purchase price, regardless of what the problem is. Fish died? Here's half your money. Oh, it was our fault? Well, here's half your money anyhow. You've had the fish for 2 hours, it hasn't even come out of the bag, and you realize that you've been given misinformation? Well, you'll only get 50% back. Must be a "service" fee. :grr:

The only time I've had a problem was with a plant that was sold to me as an aquatic plant (but wasn't), and I will say that they refunded the full amount. But I wouldn't be surprised if it'd only been 50% if I were returning a fish, rather than a plant, for the same reason. [Although I will say that there are very few non-aquatic fish out there! :p ]

They generally seem to have healthy stock and tanks -- and a wide variety of fish -- but I must say that I buy from them as little as possible. And I held my breath for two weeks after I spent almost $40 on a Gold Nugget Pleco!

Well I bought those fish when I had my first tank, before I knew about cycling or anything else. :p

Ok, thats fine, they should have given you better advice, but since when does being a newb say you cant research your fish?

I was a newb once too, and i made a good few mistake, And i still do sumtimes!, but i researched my fish before putting them in!

Not me. :p I just said "Oo look at the pretty fish! I want that one and that one AND that one!" ;)

Then I researched why my paradise's tail was completely gone the next day. :-(

Very true - researching what you want first is key. Or even going to the lfs and seeing what you like and then go home and research. Saves a lot of heartache in the long run.

It would be cool if the lfs had a PC setup with an internet connection so you could research the fish you just fell in love with on the spot!!

thats true that you have to research it, but its soo hard (for me especially) because I fall in love with the fishie, then I remember the money in my pocket...and then the LFS employee only has good things to say about the fish im looking at...

That happened to me in super pet. I almost bought this adorable colombian shrk for only $8...the employee told me that it would stay happy in a 55g tank, never mind a 90g and would get along just fine with all of my tetras and ottos....but I decided to research it first

When I got home, I found out that the fish would need a huge (200+ gallon) tank, brackish water and would eat everything else it could fit in its mouth (which is just about anything else in my tank). Needless to say, I learned my lesson!

research the fish that i already have 6 of? Think i didnt research? You are acting like the lfs employee now and isulting intelligence. As already stated all my fish have came out of THE EXACT SAME TANK. Now since they have bigger numbers sometimes what happens when u put them in a smaller number tank the agression get spread to a particular fish. ANd as already stated i am no expert on EVERY last detail of EVERY strain of fish. Any way i just biked two hours in the rain up hill, in the dark to a WAYY better fish store that actually lables their indivdual cichlids rather than "assorted cichlids" and agreed to take back any fish within 3 days if they are not gettin along with my current fish. Please dont insult intelligence. THanks.

No one insulted your intellegence, and sorry if you took it that way, i think i just let loose a little cause alot of peeps, young and old, new or experienced, come on here and say "it was the lfs's fault" (not exactly those words) but they try to blame it on the lfs when they get a bad combo, or something dies. And as a felow fish keeper i feel that it aint always the lfs's fault. Sorry, i normally dont do say stuff like that normally.

*refrain your-self miagi*

As for you biking it up a hill for 2hrs in the rain to return fish, mate, you are a legend
