I've recently started a 10g nano tank and something is perplexing me to no end.

I added a ton of live rock, rich with coraline. I figured on these grounds, as well as according to my co-worker (whom runs the saltwater side in our LFS) that one fish -should- be okay. However, I waited about 5 days anyway.

I introduced a zebra striped damsel. He died within 48 hours. Utterly disappointed, I've decided to wait for any cycling to end, however..

One rock had a TON OF HITCHIKERS. I have found about 4 nerite (astrea?) snails, a turbo snail, a peppermint shrimp, and a few random hermits and they're all fine. By my knowledge, without properly acclimating them, they should have died off rather quickly to begin with.. not to mention they're prevailing through a cycle!

Why is my newfound CUC doing well but a fish did not? Thanks.

Yesterday you were talking about your high ph and how you had taken all of your hitchhikers back to the lfs.

Have you added more LR as you said in your other post you had 11lbs which would be about right for your 10g tank. I have never lost any hitchhiking critters but then I have never had a cycle. I'm confused as to how you have an ammonia reading with mature rock in the tank last time I saw an ammonia reading was when I was spooning the stuff into my Malawi tank to start the fishless cycle.
I don't think you have much hope of working out what's happening until you test that tap water you're using and working out what it is you are putting in the tank, most of us start with RO water so can't even guess what would help you really. I know if I used my tap water it would be 20ppm nitrate immediately does seem strange that your tap water is testing absolute zero for nitrate? What are the params of your shops water?

I've been trying to catch the remaining few, I took back the majority. Should've specified, sorry. I thought I had them all but I left the light off for two days or so and noticed them in there. I have a lot of rock in there so it doesn't surprise me.

And yes, I did add more live rock, I believe the snails came with the pieces I bought yesterday considering I only had 3 in initially and I took 3 back.

I'm going to probably do a 50 percent water change with distilled water on friday and check the parameters then.
