Rarest / Most Sought After Fish In The Uk

OMFG! Why do people join this forum if they just abuse other peoples threads? Why cant you just answer a question without putting the topic starter down by making pathetic jokes that arn't even funny about there question? You wouldnt like it. And i can take a joke but why dont you start a joke thread on the non fish bit?

The rarest fish are probably either:

Arowana
Mudskippers
zebra plec (not as rare as the others)
rays

Im not that shure but i think it would look something a bit like that.

Actually arowana's arent rare at all, the most expensive of the 6 species is Scleropages formosus which are bred all across Asia in dirt ponds, they are expensive as they are seen as status symbols in Asian culture and this has rubbed off onto the west, different colour morphs sell for different ammount ranging from greens which can be bought for about £100 right up to chillie reds and platinum X backs which cost thousands.
The most commonly seen arowana is the silver arowana of which specimins can be bought for as little as £20.

Mudskippers, again not rare but they require specialist set ups and care so most shops dont stock them, when they are in stock they cost just a few pounds.

Zebra plecs are rare in the trade because their export from Brazil has been banned along with almost every other fish and they command high prices because people WANT them.

Rays again arent rare, some are becoming difficult to get now because of the Brazil restrictions and your average shop isnt going to stock them becuae they require expert care and can be delicate but they are easily available if you want them.

the most sought after loach
is the Emporer botia botia Sp.
Despite having been known since 1993, very few fish have ever been exported
and will always command a high price because of rarity and desirability

Well i never, i saw two of these today, 18 pounds for 2, but im in Leeds you will be gutted to know if you are a loach man!

Zebra plecs are a ten-a-penny when compared to the blue-eyed panaque imo.

Ahh yes! I knew there was a fish i had hear of before that was dead rare.
I was asking about them a few month ago on this forum.
I saw one once in pets at home! lol

I believe there are some that are mistaken for zebra plecs too.. how much was the one in pets at home?

Squid

It's more a case of some lfs's and importers will attach the name zebra to any plec they can because they can then add on another 20-30 quid onto the asking price, whether it be a false zebra, choclate zebra etc etc

Again, I rephrase my earlier post- cash value is by no means a synonym for 'rare'. Sought after, perhaps- as already mentioned, L046's go for hundreds because everyone wants a breeding group, same goes for rays, aro's, some of the really revolting flowerhorns, large clown loaches, etc, etc. But, for example, you try importing me a Vandellia sp. (candiru), Parauchenoglanis sp., or similar, for love or money. I bet you you can't.

The Ferretfish is a rariety, i've always wanted one. Not much information is avaliable on them actually. I once saw one at Birmingham Aquatics selling for 420. The funny thing is that they aren't actually that difficult to breed so it puzzles me why there aren't more of them :/

Funnily enough I was reading about these in a magazine today! Apparently they will be avaliable in most fish shops by 2008
