why are some foam sheets shaped like egg cratingt they call it reticulated foam sheets thinking of maybe replacing the weird and ineficent system in my 50 with a set of 3 reticulated foam sheets(fine medium and coarse)and some filter wool does it have any ups downs is it designed for anything specific

I would suggest the reticulation gives you a greater surface area for your bacteria. Depending on price I'm not sure I'd bother if it was more expensive, my filter flow appears to be adequate with just the flat pads, the water travels through the whole filter pad without issue, so if the reticulated sheets are more expensive I wouldn't pay extra.
