Can I keep rams in a planted tank? I have a 29gal that currently has africans in it and I wanted to transfer them over to a 28 and make the 29 a planted tank. I wanted cichlids but these are the only kind I can think of that might be good in that type of setting. I would get only low lighting plants.

The books I checked out say they come from South America. Therefore I think they are from bodies of water with very many or at least a few plants. Therefore, it should be ok. However, they are cave breeders, I believe, so it wouldn't hurt to have caves or the like for them to hide in.

Yeah, they come from the llanos between Colombia and Venezuela, therefore there are plenty of plants in their natural surroundings. There would be no problems with the blue rams and your plants.
Have in mind though, that in a fish tank with sand or very fine gravel, the rams will dig up a bit,but nothing to be too worried about.

Digging is actually good. It helps the substrate stay stirred up and prevents problems due to air pockets, etc...

It's the reason MTS are recommended for all sand bottom tanks. :)

I'm glad to hear it. Something to keep in mind for the future.
