having read the pinned thread i know rams and apistos need 10g each, but is that specific to species?
for example, i have a 40g tank so i could potentially keep 4 rams. does that then mean i cannot keep any apistos with those 4 rams, or does it not matter as they are a different genus?
i would like to keep 2 x blue ram (1M 1F) 2x gold ram (1M 1F) and 3 times apistogramma sp (1M 2F)
would this be possible?
BTW the tank is well planted to break up territories

You can breed some apisto's in a 10 gallon( potentially a harem). Borelli's are hard to spawn, mine never did. But they sure are pretty. Stuff like ram's though, im not sure about their breeding habit's, i think they just make pairs. You can keep ram's with apisto's. I know people, adn i have personally kept borelli's with Kribensis Cichlid's.

i know about the breeding, what i want to know is, can 4 rams and 3 apistos be kept in a 40g, or would i need a 70g minimum?

It's a tight squeeze. Provide lots of caves, territories and you might get away with it. Cichlids can be unpredictable, so the only way you will truly know, is if you give it a try.

ok, thanks for the advice, i will give it a go then
