Hi guys, in the near future my next purchase will be 2 Bolivian rams possible 2 female to stop any breeding & territory problems.

My question is how to identify them... I've been in my local aquatic centre where they have "Rams" I'm presuming these are GBR & look very similar to them, they've also sold in the past "Blue Rams" which aren't the electric type & have the GBR colourings, upon research these are a new strain of Electric/GBR, I've not yet seen any Bolivians for sale.

Firstly are my above thinkings correct & secondly which type of Ram is best to get for a beginner who has Rummynose, Otto's & Sterbai Cories.

Bolivians are the easiest. Sexing them is difficult to do as both sexes are almost identical.
Blue rams are what they call the wild color type.

Sexing is easy if you look at their breeding tubes. I have 6 Bolivian Rams and can pick out the three females from a few feet away if they are out front.

They have to be in breeding readiness in order to see their tubes. If they are young, or stressed they aren't going to be showing their tubes. This is why its usually recommended to buy six, this gives you a good chance of having at least one member of the opposite sex.

When I got my rams another member gave me this link. Made sexing rams very easy and was able to conclude within 10 minutes that I have two males.

That's the website I used, I couldn't find where I linked it to Ruskell. Better bookmark it to link to later..thnx

The ones I bought always had their breeding tubes showing from day one. I'm sure that doesn't mean they all will. The ones I bought were about 2 inches long already

Interesting site. I have it bookmarked now for futurama reference. All the bolivians I ever see in my area including the ones I purchased are juveniles.
