hello,

i have a ram, and its has been staying pretty much at the bottom of the tank which is exspected from what i hvae read, but im having a hard time telling if it is eating or not, i swear it picks things up but spits iit back out. should the ram be surfacing for food? i am trying to feed it everything from flakes, to freeze dried blood worms, brineshrimp pellets, frozen blood worms, and chilid pellets... It seems to be a fairly active fish so i think it may be eating and im just not seeing it?? is there any signs i should be watching for to make sure that it is ok? any help would be appreciated.

Thank You,

Alex

You should be able to see the ram feeding when they are happy and hungry they will actively compete with much faster fish and come up to the top of the tank. It should go for the frozen blood worm. It may not be too happy they need soft water in a well cycled mature tank they can be difficult to keep happy if the water quality is not what they need.

I had a German Blue Ram in a new but cycled tank and he would do the same, I could never get him to come to the top and he would spit his food out. Your ram should eventually get used to eating what you feed it as long as you vary its diet which is what your doing. If you want to see the best from your ram, feed it live or frozen foods.

Thank you, i have been doing this but i try to feed it more flakes than anything as it is omnivorious, plus i dont want my angelfish to be its greedy self and eat to much protein and get sick.

Your welcome. Your Ram would do better on a high quality sinking pellet.

Hi

I have 2 x bolivian rams and they are always hungry for food! They also swim everywhere in the tank not just at the bottom so yours doesn't sound too happy. Have you checked your water quality with a proper test kit (not those 'dip sticks') ?

Mine are fed on frozen shrimp brine, mosquito lavae and daphnia, a good quality flake and also like the odd sinking algae wafer. Funnily enough they dont like chilid pellets! Dont worry about them spitting it out - they are very messy eaters and you will also see some coming out of their gills whilst chewing.
