Ram Cichlid Emergency!

What about Peat moss? Someone said get some Peat, put it in a small mesh or cotton bag, and place it behind or in front of the filter cartridge... that it will lower the pH to 6.8 and keep it there.

would it lower the pH too fast?

The discolouration, lowers the PH, the Tannins leached from the almond tea bags, or peat moss etc, will lower the PH. It shouldn't lower too fast, it will happen over a few days.

Ok, I'm going to try the peat moss since that's more readily available to me. I'll let you know how it goes... though I think it's too late, one of my rams is sick.

I can't tell if its got ick or a fungus because there are only 2 white spots, each of them on one fin... they're raised and bigger than the ich I was treating in my main tank. so I'm leaning towards fungus. I'm thinking of just taking them back to the fish store and telling them, use one of your display models as a sick tank, I'm done. Unfortunately, the fish will probably just be euthanised.

I raised the temp to 83, and in a few hours I'll raise it to 86. if it's ick, ick can't survive in temps higher than 85, especially when they burst and become free swimming. Don't know what i'll do if it's fungus. I have to go to the hospital myself, I think I have boo boo that's infected pretty bad. When I get home I'll try to get a pic.

Are you sure it wasn't a calcium deposit on the fishes fin?

Its still there... he still has good color, still is swimming, and still is being a bit frisky with the other one... but I worry that this is a fungus or start of ich... (the other doesn't have any at all.) so it could be a caclium deposit.

I still have the water set at 83, I may bump it at least to their highest allowed temp of 85. That tends to slow down most illnesses, especially ick.

I am going to have to order either Peat moss or the tea bags from online, because they don't have almond leave teabags that I could find, and peat moss is "weeks away" according to Walmart and K-mart. Which should I get? the moss or the tea? I'll take whichever you suggest.

Also, how long do I leave them in there? Permanently? until the pH is lowered? after every water change? Which would make the least water discoloration? I'm sure every time you put in a new tea bag (hopefully they like the taste of strong tea. Lol), the water will get very dark... not sure about peat moss. I want to get this pH in check.

im quite shocked to learn all this about blue rams i never new they were so hard to keep! i consider myself very lucky after reading this, i bought 2 bac in october, havin asked the assistant if they would be suitable for my community tank n never informed me they were so fussy lol. ive never had a bit of trouble with em they are very happy n my PH is about 7.5 n temp in 25C

Are you sure they're blue rams and not some other type such as Bolivian? It's just that a friend of mine got 2 blue rams a while back, not knowing they were unsuitable for her tank and it's residents, both fish died within 2 weeks of going into the tank...ph was 7.5 and temp was 26C...all other residents are fine...

They are extremely fragile fish and need everything "just" right...

obviosly i pesonally cant be certain but the guy told me n were sellin them as german blue rams, they cost a good deal more than the standard rams he had in another tank

The blue Rams I got were actually the same price as the Bolivians they were suppose to get me. They do look quite a bit alike, especially when you first get them. (When they're stressed they lose their color, so when they are younger and stressed, it's hard to tell them apart.) Plus they have the same markings... a black "Dalmation" spot on their sides, the black line over their eyes...

but blue rams you can tell because of the sharp blue and yellow coloring. The Bolivian Rams I was looking at online had more red/pink especially outlining their fins.

They tend to be slightly easier to care for than the German Blue Rams from what I've read.

So far, everything seems to be going well, minus the two spots on the one (which haven't grown or spread). I'm leaning towards Fungus, but Wilder (who answered my question in the tropical emergency thread) said that it could still be white spot. Perhaps cranking the temp to 85 just stopped the spread. So we're on a wait to see what happens I guess.

otherwise they're eating well, exploring the tank, they seem to get along, though one tends to annoy the other on occassion, so the other will charge the annoying one and make them back off for a bit. Their colors are bright, and their fins look fine... so I'm not going to panic just yet.

at least they didn't die the same day I brought them home. That's a plus. isn't it?

I finally found some peat moss, and I have a cotton mesh back to put it in... should I remove the filter cartridge, and put that in instead, or should I use both?
