I thought my female ram had died, she was completely still amongst the rocks at the bottom of the tank, however when I moved one of the rocks to lift her out she was very much alive, and twisted round a few times before going back to the same position - with her body in a crevice between two rocks and her body against one of them.

Do you think she is laying eggs? Do rams reproduce readily and will they become protective of the eggs/fry like kribs do?

Doesn't sound like she is laying eggs. Ram breeding behavior is similiar to Kribs though. But usually when cichlids are spawning and protecting eggs they are moving constantly.

She has lost balance, very lethargic, breathing heavily, dull/black stress colour. In quarantine tank overnight with some meds but not looking good....
